@MeganSamples23 Knowing some individuals who have been in residential homes they definitely do feel it is the end. However, I have also witnessed how the help of the care team can turn that around for them and give them hope. #TarletonCWF22
The first residential setting for for juvenile delinquents was built in New York in the 1800s called the The House of Refuge. (Crosson- Towers, 2018) #TarletonCWF22
@Caylajo13@Pandamh98 Yes family reunification is always the goal. It is hard to sometimes remember and work towards when the parents are not working services or when it appear that the child is happier and healthier with the foster family. But reunification is always the goal. #TarletonCWF22
Kinship foster care has a higher success rate than unrelated care. On average a child stays 6.5 months in unrelated care, while in kinship they stay about 10.5 months. (Crosson- Towns, 2018) #TarletonCWF22
@Reagan_D_W I agree there are a lot of prejudices towards teen/young mothers. That is why it is so important to educate them not only on safe sex, but also parenting classes and to get them plugged into a supportive community. We as social workers can help with that. #TarletonCWF22
Since teens have higher complications with pregnancy it is medical professionals and some social workers job to educate them on their life style choices, consequences for the baby and prepare the expectant mothers for whatโs to come (Crosson-Tower, 2018). #TarletonCWF22
@blythem943 I am not sure it always leads us down a road of crime, but I can definitely see the hurtful behaviors when trauma is left unhealed. Those who are hurt, hurt. So you must heal, to help heal. #TarletonCWF22
In the juvenile court system,Social workers can help alleviate trauma for all by being reliably professional, assuring the safety and welfare of the children in state custody, being respectful of parents and honestly assuring them of their childrenโs welfare.(Cross-Tower,2018)
@Claudia71718294@DrNPJones@miranda69793219 I agree! There is actually a training called TBRI - Trust Based Relational Intervention that teaches how to help with kids from hard places and deal with the behavioral issues and trauma that comes with coming from hard places. Itโs amazing. #TarletonCWF22
Traumatized children tend to be more hyperventilate than none traumatized children. They often over react to situations that may not seem stressful or a threat to others (Crosson-Tower, 2018). #TarletonCWF22
@Reagan_D_W What can we, or current social workers do right now with the way Covid-19 is affecting our youth and the reporting rates and how it is making it more difficult for teachers to report since they are virtual? How can we make a difference in this? #TarletonCWF22
It is assumed that teens are the most vulnerable from firearm deaths. Yet in 2010 there were 55 kids under 5 years old killed by guns. Thatโs more than law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty that year (Crosson-Tower,2018). #TarletonCWF22
During the Roman Empire, infanticide, the killing of babies, was very prevalent. It was used to control the population and ensure they would remain healthy and strong (Crosson-Tower, 2018). This practice was widespread in Hawaii and China. #TarletonCWF22
@chasnie_k I agree, they are at a higher risk of drug use, dropping out, and teen pregnancy. What services do you think we could offer or put in place to help prevent those children from becoming a statistic, and instead a successful adult? #TarletonCWF22
@blythem943 I agree, itโs called toxic stress. A lot of single parents struggle with this because they do not have a good support system. What do you think we can put in place to help avoid this patter of toxic stress? #TarletonCWF22
