Towards the end of WWII and just before the jet age took over in 1944 there was an experimental bomber called the Douglas XB-42 Mixmaster, a pusher aircraft with both Allison V-1710 engines buried in the fuselage driving contra-rotating props at the tail.
The landing gear was tricycle and a full, four surface cruciform tail was fitted, whose ventral fin/rudder unit incorporated a tailwheel to prevent the coaxial propellers from striking the ground.
There was a danger of bailing out and hitting the rear propellers so designers installed explosives to sever the props from the tail cone in event of an emergency.
It first flew on May 6 1944 hit 410 mph at 23440 feet cruised at 312 mph carried up to 8000 lb of bombs and set a 2295-mile cross-country speed record averaging 433.6 mph with a tailwind. Only two were built. 😎
the masculine urge to slowly bleed in the snow is probably the same feeling as being a grunt suit pilot taking on a clearly ace mobile suit or a big threat in a last ditch effort of a last stand in battle
The faster you go, the hotter you get. The SR 71 remains the fastest airplane in the world. Nothing has broken the record.
X-15 does not count. It was unable to get to altitude on its own power, needed the B-52 to carry it up.

Here’s an updated chart of media representation in the line. Last Friday we chatted through which shows/movies could use some more love. What do you think?
