@tanyabakija @AnnMemmott Yes, definitely! The responsive feeding approach and the division of responsibility formula support children’s autonomy, which provides the optimal foundation for building natural curiosity about foods.
@AnnMemmott @LizPeecock So wrong on so many levels. As is the common perception of a universally beneficial “healthy” diet, especially for younger children.
@AnnMemmott As is yours! At this point, the amount of knowledge on child feeding development from both research and clinical work has surpassed the level of support available to parents, and it needs to be addressed.
@AnnMemmott Thanks for sharing! There’s a big connection ruin between responsive feeding and the self-determination theory, which applies beautifully at mealtimes and beyond. If the strategy, eg. two bites, affects the child’s sense of autonomy, connection and competence, it’s not worth it.
@AnnMemmott Thank you so much for helping spread the word. Mealtime success cannot be measured only in the amount of food consumed. If a feeding approach affects a child’s sense of autonomy and connection, these two bites come at a very high cost!
If you feel stressed that your child is not eating is a “balanced way”, it could be that they are just following the typical for their age eating pattern and you feel the societal pressure to achieve the evasive nutritional perfection.
My teenage kids complain that “we didn’t have dinner as a family” if my partner and I take it easy and let everyone fend for themselves. And this makes all the years of messy dinners with small kids totally worth it.
