People believe Andrew won for the same reason fish believe there’s no such thing as water.
When you see only one debate tactic—a bag of tricks that’s really just one trick—you think that’s the entirety of what debate is. Anything outside of that must be wrong, must be against the rules.
With Orthobros (and atheists, not coincidentally), the trick is making you believe they’re owed an explanation for everything. They’ll be the arbiters of what opinions you’re allowed to hold, thank you very much. You better be ready to explain them.
If you say you prefer pickles over olives, we’ll just see about that. Will it hold up to the Socratic method and internal critique? No? Don’t want to engage? Then you obviously have a hidden agenda about pickles.
This works well for them on the interwebz because that’s the general attitude. If you post something like “pickles are better than olives” get ready for the brigade. Get ready to prove it factually. Oh, you won’t do that? Then you must be a coward. You must be lying. You must be a paid shill for Vlasic.
Denying them their god given right to ratify or veto your personal opinions drives them insane. It does not compute.
To them, there is no such thing as opinion. There’s only truth and untruth. Opinion is bullshit. Either something is true or it’s not.
But sometimes you don’t know. It’s my opinion that gravity is some sort of bend in momentum. I wouldn’t be able to write it out on a chalkboard. I can’t prove it. It’s a feeling, a sentiment. Gravity **feels** a lot like momentum, like we’re glued to the surface of the planet the same way you’re glued to your car seat when you accelerate.
Am I wrong because I can’t prove it? Am I a coward because I can’t explain it? Am I lying because it’s a “feeling”?
Orthobros would tell me something like “pshh, you’ve never even heard of spacetime curvature. You don’t even know your own beliefs. Tell me what spacetime curvature is doofus.”
If you say, “well, this is just an opinion—gravity feels like momentum”, then you’ve just lost the debate. You’re just appealing to your emotions and external senses dude. You have nothing!
See it?
The way you defeat it is by being unapologetically opinionated about everything, and speak it authoritatively as fact. Be a Chad about it.
“Andrew Wilson can’t open a jar of pickles.”
This drives them nuts because it’s olives, not pickles. You’re factually wrong, but of course, the being wrong is intentional. It’s to break them. I mean, it’s very likely he can’t open a jar of pickles either. It’s not like the two are much different. It’s an opinion that hasn’t technically been proven, but it’s not a lie either. It’s in a no man’s land like an itch you can’t get to.
Personal opinion drives them insane. Stating it factually drives them insane. Not being given permission to critique it drives them insane, and Candace capitalized on that brilliantly.
