@KIN110UofR This is an example of how the media portrays athletes. Had some other person broke up the robbery they would probably get no media attention, but since it was a pro hockey player it became a trending topic on Twitter.
Mark “borocop” Borowiecki told us last night he stopped a robbery on their off day in Van. Someone was trying to take a backpack out of a car and Boro told them to stop. When the guy charged at him he clotheslined him and got the bag back.
In short, Boro is superman. #Sens
@BriannaSwyryda@KIN110UofR I think that rugby could be considered as one of the most violent sports because of the very little protective gear players wear, as well as the physicality of trying to tackle the other teams players.
@KIN110UofR Current Carolina Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour, who was once an assistant coach with the Calgary Flames coach Bill Peters, mentions the balance of power between coaches and players in today’s world and the incidents that happened while Peters was in Carolina.
@KIN110UofR First Don Cherry and his “you people” comment, then Mike Babcock forcing a young player to rank his teammates, and finally Bill Peters accused of abusing his players verbally and mentally. All are white males. Is this the beginning of change to the hockey culture?
A few former and current NHL players talk openly about being verbally or physically abused or mistreated by past coaches. The tremors begin. Wonder if the Mike Babcock story, the Bill Peters case might signal the beginning of a kind of MeToo movement for pro hockey?
Toronto Maple Leafs President and Alternate Governor Brendan Shanahan announced today that Mike Babcock has been relieved of his coaching duties and Sheldon Keefe has been named the Club’s new head coach. #LeafsForever
@KIN110UofR For the last few weeks leading up to the Western Final the only topic the media wanted to talk about was the Fajardo injury. The media realized that most of Sask would want to know his status and thus made the decision to talk about his injury everyday until the game.
@KIN110UofR I think that encouraging women to get involved in sport and providing them with workshops and opportunities to succeed in leadership roles will help end the societal norm that women cannot be in leadership roles.
@KIN110UofR I think that the norms of masculinity in sports is changing. There are more males participating in sports considered feminine like figure skating and gymnastics, while there are more opportunities arising for females to participate in sports considered male dominate like football
@KIN110UofR Women in sports like hockey are very underrepresented in the media, as the only time they get coverage is during the Olympics (although most time is spent on men’s hockey), the championship game in the CWHL or NWHL, or when they are fighting for equal rights.
@KIN110UofR Most sports teams edit highlights from their past games to create a pump up video for fans before their next game. This is a highlight package from the Canadiens home opener last night. #represent#editing
@KIN110UofR Sportsnet edits the Toronto Blue Jays games to make a show called Blue Jays in 30. It showcases all of the highlights from the last game and allows people to watch the game in 30 mins. #editing
@KIN110UofR The European Golf Tour announced new rules for pace of play starting in 2020 to make golf more enjoyable for fans. The rules include implementing a time allowance when hitting a shot, reducing the amount of players in the field, and educating the athletes on pace of play policies
@KIN110UofR I think that commercials do not really impact my enjoyment of sports. Commercials are necessary while watching hockey because it provides the viewer a chance to do something quick, and provides the players a longer break.
@KIN110UofR Every Christmas I get a Montreal Canadiens calendar, and my dad has a Montreal Canadiens wristwatch. I have also got Montreal Canadiens themed pencils before. #consumption#materialism
@KIN110UofR I would let my children play on #adventureplaygrounds as long as someone was supervising them. I would want them to develop their physical abilities and skills by playing on adventure play grounds!
