I increasingly think the world of mental health and neurodiversity has more in common with fashion than science. You’re more likely to see the return of an idea from twenty years ago than anything actually new.
Literature is humanity’s longest conversation with itself about what it means to be alive. It has been going on for thousands of years. You are not late, you are not unqualified, you are not too much or too little or too broken. Pull up a chair. This conversation was always about you.
@olidnejad Okay. Well, I’m sorry you feel that way. As I say, I subsequently developed my thinking a lot while writing The Heartland. You might like that one more (but maybe not). Thanks again for the review and engaging with the book.
@olidnejad Fair enough. I stand by the points I make in that article. And I believe that - broadly - the novel made a positive contribution to mental health discourse. But of course it is still flawed. And quite old now! I developed much of my thinking in my subsequent book of nonfiction.
@olidnejad Hi. Thanks for the thoughtful video review. I’ve wrestled with many of the issues you raise. I explore some of them in this short article:

I say quite a lot more in my PhD thesis but I won’t bore you with that!
