Ever wonder what happens to utility equipment when we're done using it?
Thanks to our Investment Recovery team, retired materials don't automatically become waste. Whenever possible, assets are reused, sold, recycled, repurposed, or donated, helping reduce waste, recover value, and offset costs on future projects.
One recent example: these utility wire spools, the giant wooden reels used to transport wire, found a second life at The Haven at Skanda animal sanctuary in Central New York.
Instead of being discarded, they're now a favorite hangout for goats and donkeys.
It's a small example of how finding new purpose for retired assets can benefit customers, support local communities, and keep useful materials out of the waste stream.

In Upton, Massachusetts, our crews are rebuilding a 345 kV transmission line without turning the power off.β‘οΈ
Itβs specialized work known as live line maintenance, and weβre one of only a handful of utilities in the country with crews that specialize in this work.
As part of the 323 ACR Project, our Transmission Live Line Services (TLS) crews are replacing 134 wood H-frame structures with steel. By performing this work while the line remains energized, we can make critical upgrades while helping maintain reliable service for customers.
Using specialized hot stick and barehand methods, crews work from live line bucket trucks and wear conductive protective suits designed for high-voltage work.
Every job includes extensive safety measures, including designated safety observers, meter monitoring, and daily testing of equipment and tools.
Itβs highly skilled work that allows us to modernize critical transmission infrastructure while continuing to deliver safe, reliable power to the communities we serve.
A closer look inside a 115 kV underground transmission cable. β‘
High-voltage underground cables use a carefully designed insulation layer and several surrounding barrier and shielding components to safely carry electricity across our network.
This cable contains segmented copper conductors that carry electrical current, surrounded by cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation designed to withstand the very high voltages used in power transmission. Outside the insulation are a grounded sheath and protective rubber jacket that provide physical protection for the cable system.
Together, these components are one of the many technologies we use to deliver safe, reliable electricity to our customers.
@thehick344 Hi there. We're very sorry for the frustration this has caused and would like to look into this for you. Can you please send us a direct message with your first and last name, account number, full address, and email address on the account? Thank you.

No trending audio. Just the sound of a 100-year-old substation getting a major upgrade. β‘
We're rebuilding the Lawrence, MA substation, which has served the community for more than 100 years. Construction began in 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2028, replacing aging equipment with modern infrastructure that will help improve reliability for more than 3,000 customers in the area.
Designed with the community in mind, the substation is enclosed by a 10-foot brick wall featuring murals by local artist Kate Delaney. The artwork reflects the long-standing connection between the City of Lawrence and the energy that helps power it every day.
@JR102880 Hi there, We have several outages in this area at this time. Could you please send us a private message with the specific address for the outage in your are? Thank you
Brooklyn's Greenest Block competition is about more than gardens. It's about communities coming together.
This week, we joined @BklynBotanic, @CMCrystalHudson, and other community leaders to celebrate the first-place winners of this year's Greenest Block in Brooklyn competition.
Congratulations to the residents of Lincoln Place in Crown Heights for earning the top spot and showing what's possible when neighbors work together to make their block bloom.

While most people see a work zone, we see skilled teams working to maintain and strengthen the infrastructure that powers everyday life.
In Sunset Park, Brooklyn, our crews are performing important reliability work to help ensure customers can continue counting on safe, reliable service.
Their work may happen behind the scenes, but it helps power the moments that matter for the communities we serve. π
The careers young people consider are often shaped by the people they meet along the way.
Recently, Amy Broz, our only female line mechanic in New York, visited Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region (@GirlsIncGCR) to share her story, answer questions, and give girls a firsthand look at line work.
Experiences like these help young people explore new possibilities, build confidence, and discover career paths that can make a difference in their communities and beyond. π
@moranbishop Hi there, Β We could certainly look into this for you. Can you please tell us the name on the account, the service address, a contact telephone number, and the date of birth or email address on the account? Thank you.
