The task force will ensure that no one can ever breach the sanctity of our examination system.

There is a lot of chatter about sections of the media in the aftermath of the recent protest at Jantar Mantar. It has become almost fashionable to dismiss any journalist or media house one disagrees with as “godi media.” What happened to some journalists at the protest was unacceptable. A few were targeted, and women journalists, in particular, were subjected to vile sexual abuse. There can be no justification for that.

At the same time, it is equally evident that another section of the media was treated as part of the spectacle rather than as independent observers. They appeared to enjoy the confidence of the protesters while others were branded and abused. If one set is labelled “godi” for allegedly being close to those in power, what label applies to those perceived to be aligned with the organisers or a political ecosystem?

This selective outrage is hardly new. Long before 2014, there was an influential circle of journalists widely seen as enjoying extraordinary access to the Congress leadership. Over the years, the names and platforms may have changed, but the ecosystem, incentives and alignments have remained familiar. Some moved from television to YouTube, others reinvented themselves as independent voices, but the underlying partisanship often remained intact.

Perhaps it is time to stop reducing every journalist to a political label simply because they hold a different worldview. If media independence is the standard, it should apply consistently to everyone, not just those one happens to disagree with.

VIDEO | In view of the videos of Assam minister Keshab Mahanta's daughter joining a protest against irregularities in the NEET exam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) says that his Cabinet colleague should not be trolled as "she may not follow her father's political ideology".

Reacting to the videos, Sarma on Saturday said, "I don't think we should attack or troll Keshab Mahanta for the protest by his daughter. She may not follow her father's political ideology. Tomorrow when my son will practice law, he may defend someone whom I may not like." He said that once children become adults, their actions should not be linked with their parents.

"I do not agree with the slogans she raised. When I meet her next time, I will definitely talk to her about it and try to make her understand that what she said was not right," Sarma said.

Dibisa Mahanta shouted "Neem Ka Patta Kadwa Hai, Modi Saala Bhadwa Hai" at CJP protest in Guwahati.

She is daughter of Keshab Mahanta who is Working President of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). He is a Cabinet Minister in the Assam Government. AGP is in coalition with BJP in Assam.

Keshab ji was born in a middle-class family. He became a politician and became very rich, very quickly, like so many others in our country. He must have worked very hard to fund these two fancy Foreign University degrees for his daughter.

​Before abusing Modi, Dibisa ji should give us details of how hard her father worked, and maybe then people will take her seriously.
