Indigenous tourism is reconciliation in action. I have been saying this for years and I know that I never really clarified why so let me share a little bit this evening.

I have decided to share some of the presentation I made today, which included very specific information about my family, and why I have been so committed to my work with Indigenous tourism throughout Canada for 20 years now.

Our journey towards reconciliation for all Indigenous people, including my Metis family, is so important to me.

The beauty of Indigenous cultural tourism is the power of our stories, so I hope you enjoy a small glimpse of my story.

Thank you to the amazing board members and all of my team, which is majority Indigenous from several communities, who have allowed me this opportunity to contribute to Indigenous cultural tourism throughout Canada.

Please remember my words, that we as Indigenous people must allow a safe space as many of us reconcile our history and reclaim our culture. We need to support each other as First Nations, Metis, and Inuit in this difficult journey. I worry about the identity politics so deeply damaging this reconciliation process amongst our own families that is being done to so many people.

I will do all I can to encourage indigenous people to reconcile amongst ourselves. How can we ask Canadians to reconcile with us if we can’t reconcile with one another as First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples

We must and can do this.

Sage Memorial Hospital opens its doors to Diné in need

GANADO, Ariz. – The nearest Level 1 Trauma hospital in Flagstaff is 141 miles away for residents in Ganado and surrounding communities.

Now this long commute is shorter. On Friday, the new $177 million Sage Memorial Hospital opened its doors to the public.

“Our Díné people deserve the latest technology,” said Jefferson James, master of ceremonies for the grand opening of the hospital.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren has supported the new construction because it will improve access to healthcare for many Diné people from the Ganado area.

“There are so many obstacles Navajo people face and one is the barrier of getting proper health care and treatment,” said President Nygren. “With the Ganado area getting a new hospital facility, our people will no longer need to travel far distances for primary care.”

Since 2023, President Nygren’s administration has been a part of meetings to advise in the construction of Sage Memorial Hospital and nearby road construction planning for easier and safer access to the health facility.

The original Sage Memorial Hospital was built in the early 1930s, according to Christian Bigwater, director of public relations for Sage Memorial Hospital.

Like many hospitals throughout the Navajo Nation and across Indian Country, Sage Memorial Hospital was becoming rundown and outdated.

Along with its new construction, the hospital comes with state-of-the art technology to help with primary care services.

New health care systems are part of President Nygren’s priorities and Sage Memorial is one of many.
