Leaves in #nature can have a weird look due to galls. They are bumps on the leave surface caused by insects/ other organisms. Many of these insects are species specific.
Here are typical galls found on leaves of the #Mauritian black ebony ⬇️

Ecosystem restoration:
✅is not about tree plantation
✅includes removal of invasive plants
✅is not focused on 1 species but benefit different groups of plants & animals & the interactions between them

Fruit bats have garnered global attention the past few years but microbats like the Endemic & Endangered Mauritian free-tailed bats remain overlooked and understudied thus the value of her current research on the species 🧵 2/3

His latest paper highlights that the species prefers to forage in lower-elevation forests & restoring such forests would increase fruit availability potentially reducing the need to forage on commercial fruits. 🧵(3/3)

The Dark Flying fox (Pteropus subniger) also known as the Lesser Mascarene Flying-fox & "Rougettes" went extinct between 1864 and 1873.
It was ~130 g in size, fed on nectar & fruits & roosted in tree hollows.
Deforestation and hunting were main threats.

Last but not least, meet the Mauritian flying fox (Pteropus niger) also known as the Mauritius fruit bat.
It used to occur on Rodrigues and was also locally extinct in Reunion where a few individual have been observed.
It's listed as Endangered. 6/n
