Whether the plan is to reclaim the reef or install pipe culverts, there is simply no way to carry out work of this scale without damaging the reef and disturbing the manta ray cleaning station. And this is not just any site, it is probably the only place in the Maldives where manta rays can be seen throughout the year.

Development is important, but so is environmental protection. Neither should be neglected.

Before rushing into decisions that could cause irreversible damage, the authorities have a responsibility to share accurate and transparent information with the public about the true environmental impact of these works, the alternatives considered, and how the risks will be mitigated.

I also hope environmental experts and conservationists in the Maldives will actively engage in this conversation.

Decisions with permanent consequences deserve proper scientific scrutiny and an informed public discussion.

Having said all these I don’t think Addu Bridge is going to happen for its financially simply not feasible atm

I believe the challenge is, will the government finish the Addu Link Road before these plants grow and flourish?

At this point, Addu Link Road is no longer a road. It’s a trial.

A trial of your patience.
A trial of your vehicle’s shock absorbers.
A trial of your backbone and hip bones.
And apparently, a trial of how sensitive your phone is to movement.

If your phone skips to the next song when shaken, try driving from Maradhoo to Hithadhoo. You will hear the first 15 seconds of every song in your playlist before you arrive. 😂

But jokes aside, more than 35,000 people live in Addu, making it the second-largest population centre in the Maldives. This road was built before many of the young people driving on it today knew how to drive. Years of use, combined with heavy vehicles from major development projects, have left it in an even worse condition.

We spend enormous amounts reclaiming lagoons in Greater Male Area, creating land that never existed and building entirely new urban areas on it.

So surely it is not too much for Adduans to ask the government to properly resurface the road that already exists, the road thousands of people depend on every single day.

Addu isn’t asking for a new city. We’re asking for a road we can actually drive on.
