One battle forever changed the course of history.

84 years ago, America turned the tide in the Pacific by dealing the Imperial Japanese Navy a stunning defeat at the Battle of Midway, sending the four fleet carriers of the Combined Fleet beneath the waves.

Though three more years of grueling warfare lay ahead, through the courage and sacrifice of American Sailors, Marines, and aviators, the United States would never again surrender the strategic initiative.

Heavily damaged in the #BattleoftheCoralSea, USS Yorktown reached #PearlHarbor, May 27, 1942. Repairs expected 2 weeks, but crews worked nonstop and restored it in 72 hours, returning it to sea for the #BattleofMidway, #WWII turning point.

Happy birthday, Navy Nurse Corps!

On May 13, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt signed the Naval Appropriations Bill that authorized the establishment of the Navy Nurse Corps.

In November of that year, the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery selected its first 20 nurses, which were dubbed “the Sacred Twenty.”
