@CazaubonWard This is absolutely fantastic! People with dementia and those on acute wards around the country may be assumed to not 'have capacity' or engage in the countries politics but this proves that so so wrong. I think NHS Trust need to give this more thought 💭
For #NationalWritingDay are you confident that the people we support have easy access to pen and paper? Whether it’s writing a list, a poem, a message to a friend or an important story from your life to share, this gives us a sense of independence and control.

Imagine a place and community where you are finally safe to be who you are. A place that educated the professionals who support you as you age more. A place that connected you to other generations or people with dementia. I'm heart broken to see you go. And leave such a gap 💔

An intense discussion/debate on the term functional. It's good to pause and rethink what we mean and understand. This mind-body split is appealing but reduces people to one or the other. And who is that really for?
I think there is a significant misunderstanding of what functional neurological disorder means 🚨
This needs more discussion as it affects patients
1. FND does not mean ‘psychiatric’ or a predominant ‘psychological formulation ‘ in the traditional sense- Far from it.
2. Response to psychotherapy does not define FND or functional
There is no doubt that patients are affected when functional is used to create a mind-body split and when they are told to have ‘psychotherapy’ - in that sense I agree with you. And I can also see why you assert this.
“The term functional neurological disorder conveys a condition in which the primary pathophysiological
processes are alterations in functioning of brain networks rather than abnormalities of brain structures.” ( Hallett et al,2022)
But in clinical practice both can and often coexist.
Thoughts?
Professionalism is a myth and we need authentic spaces in our profession where our authentic selves/ways of being are not policed*. This is possibly especially true for neurodivergent therapists who may have increased or traumatic experiences of being told to behave differently.
Myself and @DrAmyPearson are supervising some students who are interested in autistic masking. Anyone 18+ can take part (autistic/non-autistic, any gender), BUT if you are an autistic woman there is also the option to take part in an interview. QR/link below for more info! 1/2
