One time, I responded to a multiple fatality wreck. It was a Ford excursion with a dad and 8 young girls on their way to Utah for some sort of girls camp. They had a front right blowout, dad over corrected left, and it rolled, tossing 5 girls out of onto the highway, killing them all. The dad's head was crushed between the ground and the door frame because it was half out the window during the roll, and the other two girls were killed inside the vehicle because they were sleeping in the back and bouncing around while the suv rolled causing all sorts of blunt force trauma. I was on that fatal for 27 hours holding sheets for the coroner so she could determine the time of death and helping put them all in body bags and into coroner vans, doing traffic control, getting debris off the highway, helping the tow truck driver load the suv... One of the firefighters who responded had a daughter in that suv. The other firefighters didn't let him get out of the truck, turned it around, and took him home to his wife...
Came from a broken, more dysfunctional home but my plan to create multi-generational, loving family, starting with us is:
- live on one income so we don't outsource their childcare, work from home mostly, mostly homeschool kids through HS so we get a zillion hours with them and form strong bonds- reinforcing how important they are to us and how having kids is the best thing ever, so hopefully they'll be excited about having kids and strong families too (so far so good, all 4 are very sweet and close to us and all want to get married and have kids)
- go to all their sports and extracurricular performances and be their biggest fans
- go on lots of trips and adventures together, see the USA and the world together
- support them and love them unconditionally into young adulthood and give sacrificially to help them get a good education, straight teeth, etc.
- help financially how I can while I'm alive- don't wait to die to give them pieces of their inheritances. help them as able as they're young adults with wedding expenses, getting into their first homes, etc.
- invest in their businesses if they are worthy of it, and don't be afraid to include them in my businesses. generally do business together without fear, properly setup with proper paperwork and expectations.
- be massively helpful when grandkids arrive. offer to watch kids infinitely as needed and never be put out by it. let kids have lots of date nights without kids and take trips without them so they can have lots of support in their child-raising. then become biggest fans of grandkids and go to all their stuff too. if they live somewhere else, travel to them often and don't expect them to travel to me all the time.
- ideally I'll buy a medium/large-ish mountain cabin with a bunk room and some extra bedrooms and have an awesome gathering place for kids and grandkids to come together for vacation weeks with us whenever they want to, and maybe some annual events and traditions we do all together there (Christmas, 4th of July, etc)
- have a plane and chase kids and grandkids around and be the cool grandpa that flies them places and takes them on crazy adventures
- take everyone to church and get them brought up in a community of Believers so they'll have a sense of belonging to a Kingdom greater than themselves or our family and they have brothers and sisters around the world. go on mission trips together to rough impoverished places so their hearts can be properly broken and they can see clearly their blessings and think of ways to bless others less fortunate.
- read a zillion books with my kids and grandkids on my lap
- don't try to force anyone into a particular life path, just encourage them to know God and find out why they were put on this planet and pursue full lives in His goodness and grace with all their hearts
- pranks, dad-jokes
- cook incredible brisket and master the art of smoking meat so our meals together are bangin'

The worst kind of bankruptcy is when you no longer believe in yourself.
That level of spiritual and mental bankruptcy can destroy your BIGGEST dreams.
You will experience setbacks.
You will make bad decisions at times.
You will lose money at times. Sometimes all your money.
You will lose great clients at times.
You will lose great employees at times.
At 24 years old after having started 7 businesses I was in debt $49,000 in credit card with -$700 in my checking account.
It seemed like nothing was going my way.
I had 3 things going for myself at the time.
1. I read 4-8 books every month.
Every biography and business book I read, shared stories of the greatest leaders who came close to giving up.
The fruits of their labor was almost always right after they almost gave up.
Like Churchill says “ if you’re going through hell, keep going”.
2. I went to 4 business conference every single year since 21 years old.
This by pure coincidence forced me to be around people who were ahead of me in life.
Usually, they were 3-5 levels ahead of me in life. This challenged the hell out of me.
The constant upgrade in association, put me in a place to realize what was around the corner if I continued.
They both exposed leaks in my mindset or strategies I was using in business as well as validated what I was doing right.
3. I NEVER missed church on Sundays.
This gave me the most powerful gift.
FAITH: Belief in a brighter future
This became an edge.
It was as if a higher power was with me throughout my journey.
Fast forward 21 years later, and not much has changed.
1. I’m still consuming the same amount of content if not more
2. I’m still attending 4+ conferences every year.
Except now the associations are at much higher levels than I currently am.
Just a month ago, Jennifer and I were invited to a an exclusive event with 60 families where the minimum net worth of the families wealth was a billion. We were ranked last as a family in that room.
3. God is still the cornerstone of my life.
There’s no way I could handle running 9 companies with thousands of employees/agents nationwide.
Being married with 4 active kids.
Running a podcast.
Interviewing guests.
Researching.
Doing my best to stay active and healthy.
All on my own.
This is a byproduct of the faith and believing that he’s got his hands on everything we have going on.
He’s always brought the right people in our lives at the right time when we’re ready for it.
I couldn’t do all of this on my own.
Once again, if this isn’t the best season of your life, remember that the worst kind of bankruptcy is when you no longer BELIEVE.
Future looks bright!
The CFMEU threatened my father, they've threatened many fathers.
The powerful Unions have been the backdrop of Australian life since I was a child in the 80’s, much longer than that in fact. All our lives have been and are heavily impacted by them. My childhood was affected in ways I did not even understand till I was a little older.
My father was an executive in a large residential home building business in the 80’s. The unions were pushing to unionise the residential space in the same way as they took a strangle-hold on commercial and civil, with extreme force. Thuggish, corrupt and nasty. I did not understand why Dad always looked under the car before turning it on. Why he would peer subtly through the blinds at that car across the road. He never showed us how genuinely afraid he was for his life, our lives. He was threatened, multiple times, as were his children – my sister and me.
I once remember being on a job site with Dad on a Saturday (which kids could do in those days -we learned a lot). I remember his ordinarily gentle giant, 6 foot 5, backhoe driver, Marco (a small business owner, a sub-contractor) being held down by 4 men, including my father as he was ranting, screaming about the destruction of his family, at the two smug British born, toothless union reps. Marco was threatening to break their necks like a chicken – he meant it. The other boys on site held him down for the good of the union reps.
They were trying to force the end of sub-contracting, it would have destroyed Marco's small business. It made a lot of great hard-working men and women scared. The Unions would have destroyed their business, forced building businesses - head contractors - to take on more staff and force those staff to be unionised.
They also had other silly ideas like full toilet blocks and lunchrooms on every residential home site, 2 full-size containers on an 800 sqm block, madness. This was both impractical and unnecessary, they already looked after their workers, they had access to everything they needed. It would just increase the cost of housing for the rest of us. Putting even more pressure on small and medium builders (who do the bulk of the work).
They wanted to force unionisation in residential construction. Not for the good of the workers, businesses or home buyers, simply to the useless benefit of unions. Had they have been successful, the residential home building industry would have collapsed. It is hard enough to build homes, through planning, managing supply, managing labour, out in the elements and through the red tape.
The unions have certainly had their impact on residential home builders, the cost of Australian manufactured goods is through the roof, the safety regulations - on the borderline of insane (not at all about safety), and their broader impact on industry drives up the price of labour and more.
They seldom think about the impact of their horrendous and foolhardy ideas on the long-term health of the industry they impose on. At least I hope they don’t - because of the impacts of the things they do, that is in itself is a cause for concern. Either way like any cancer the bigger and stronger they get the more likely it is they will kill their host (like the time they completely wrecked touring cars – another story).
Residential construction is a tough business. Commercial, civil and industrial construction is equally tough. Only there the job is made even tougher by a corrupt and thuggish union. Forced unionism drive up prices; adds silly extra costs and rules; influences and meters out regulation; and they are beyond scrutiny and reproach. Unions hold business and Government to ransom, they get the protection of the law because, well, the Australian Labor Party.
The Labor Party are the Unions, the Unions are the ALP, there is no distinguishing them. They make favourable law for the Union, which in turn backs Labor, who then provide top cover for the Union when in Government. It is putrid and corrupt. The most disgusting Union is the #CFMEU. The CFMEU seem to have taken their flags off the cranes today (I wanted to snap a picture for this post, and they were all down). They should hang their heads in shame. I don’t think the workers themselves even want to be a part of it. They are co-opted by force. I believe the CFMEU increase the cost and complexity of providing housing, public buildings, commercial towers and just about every other built thing. This is bad for Australia and Australians.
Surely it is time the CFMEU be closed down, completely, something new can form in its place, not affiliated with the Labor Party. One that puts the status of the worker first, ahead of political ambition, ahead of bribery, ahead of crime. One that advocates for the membership and understands that running a business is not magic; that most business owners try to do the right thing by the people that work for them.
In fact, the relationship between the Labor Party and all the unions should be broken across the board, across the nation. It is insane that the Labor Government can be affiliated so closely with a lobby group so powerful it can shut whole industries down. So powerful it can reach directly into the public service and cause strikes to embarrass ministers of a different political persuasion. That they can run super funds that advocate for bananas DEI and ESG nonsense - ruining the companies they own.
Unions, Industry Super funds and the Labor Party are not about people anymore, they are about power, money and influence, nothing more. They export jobs and opportunity; they destroy entrepreneurship and ruin the concept of reward for risk. They will bankrupt Australia, left the way it is, there will be no Australia left for the next generation, it is that bad.
Time for a big rethink.
