NYSC REFORM SURVEY
OVERVIEW 

The Federal Government of Nigeria has constituted a committee to reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The purpose of the reform is to review the NYSC programme to make it more effective and beneficial to corps members and the nation at large.

The reform recognises that the NYSC should not only remain a symbol of national unity but must also evolve into a strategic national workforce pipeline and a skills empowerment engine. 

In order to ensure inclusiveness, the Committee is conducting this survey to gather honest opinions and ideas on how the scheme can better serve Nigeria’s development goals and the aspirations of young Nigerians.

Your responses will directly contribute to shaping recommendations for a renewed NYSC scheme that works for everyone involved and aligns with the President’s vision of building a trillion-dollar economy by 2030.

OPINION: Seven Terror Commanders Returned from Hajj. The Bigger Question Is: Who Cleared Them?

Seven suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP commanders reportedly completed one of the world’s most scrutinised international pilgrimages, boarded aircraft, travelled across international borders, landed at an international airport in Nigeria, and were only arrested upon arrival.

Pause for a moment. This is not merely another counterterrorism success story. It is also a frightening story about possible institutional failure. The obvious question should not only be how they were arrested. The more important question is: how did they get there in the first place?

Somewhere between the forests and the holy city of Makkah, somebody processed documents. Somebody approved travel. Somebody verified identities.
Somebody stamped passports. Somebody issued clearances. Somebody looked away.

And unless those “somebodies” are identified, arresting seven commanders may only scratch the surface of a much bigger security problem.

Last week, another controversy emerged when security analyst and Convener of the Katsina Security Community Initiative, Dr. Bashir Kurfi, alleged that the Katsina State Government sponsored some bandit leaders to Saudi Arabia as part of peace initiatives, claiming they received travel packages worth about ₦10 million each.

The Katsina State Government has categorically denied the allegation, describing it as false, baseless and politically motivated. Fair enough.
A denial is expected. But is a denial the end of the matter? Or should it be the beginning of a thorough investigation? That is the real issue.

When allegations of this magnitude are made by a known security advocate and they intersect with the later arrest of seven suspected terrorist commanders returning from Hajj, responsible institutions should not simply trade statements.

They should establish facts. Because Nigerians deserve answers. Were any suspected terrorists able to obtain Nigerian passport and other travel documents? If yes, how? Who verified their identities? Were aliases used? Did anyone inside any government institution facilitate the process?were there collaborators?

For years, Nigerians have focused almost exclusively on terrorists carrying rifles in the forests. Perhaps it is time to pay equal attention to insiders in offices. Terrorism rarely survives on guns alone. It also survives on compromised officials. It survives on insiders willing to replace patriotism with profit.

A terrorist cannot manufacture an international passport.He cannot approve immigration records.He cannot clear himself through airport procedures.He cannot erase himself from watchlists without help.Somewhere, someone opens the door.That person is just as dangerous as the man carrying the gun.

If the Interior Minister’s revelation is accurate, then this development should trigger one of the most comprehensive internal investigations Nigeria has conducted in recent years.

Nigeria has spent billions fighting Boko Haram and ISWAP.Thousands of soldiers have paid the ultimate price.Entire communities have been destroyed. Families have been displaced.

To then discover that suspected terrorist commanders were able to complete an international pilgrimage before being intercepted should concern every Nigerian.

Public appointees who have lost the pulse of the streets should stop insulting the public’s intelligence with dismissive statements in the media. Economic hardship in Nigeria is real and widespread: households are struggling, and friends or family who would not ordinarily ask for help are reaching out because survival demands it.

Many parents are unsure whether they will be able to pay school fees or keep a roof over their children’s heads by year’s end. Political noise and partisan squabbles may muffle these cries, but they do not erase the lived reality of ordinary Nigerians. Acknowledging that reality is not an act of opposition; it is an obligation of honest governance.

Insecurity will not be resolved simply by adding more security personnel, lasting safety requires empowering citizens through targeted, microeconomic interventions that restore livelihoods and confidence. 🇳🇬

Those words, spoken by a Plateau State Government official, may be among the most uncomfortable truths uttered in the aftermath of the latest killings in Plateau State.

The statement immediately demands an honest examination of What exactly were the “issues” he was referring to?

For years, discussions about violence in Plateau have often been reduced to a simplistic narrative of victims and aggressors. Every fresh attack triggers outrage, condemnation, and demands for justice. Rightly so. Innocent lives are being lost, communities are being destroyed, and families are being plunged into grief. But can the crisis truly be understood if only one side of the story is told?

Everyone knows the identity of those often blamed for attacks on Berom communities. They are Fulani Bandits. The media reports it. Activists discuss it. Government officials condemn it. National attention follows. Yet there is another question that is rarely asked with the same urgency:

Who kills the Fulani victims whose deaths later become the justification for reprisals and revenge attacks? (Berom Militia)

This question is not asked to excuse criminality. It is not asked to justify retaliation. It is asked because every cycle of violence has a beginning, and every reprisal has a preceding event.

When livestock are attacked, when herders are ambushed, when isolated settlements are raided, or when innocent civilians from any community are killed, such incidents deserve the same attention, documentation, and outrage as every other attack.

But No, instead whenever they attacked herders or rustled their livestock, the crises reporters will then use their platforms to issue Threat Alert knowing fully well that reprisal may happened and push to security forces and asked them to defend the community from attack. Then you will hear that another attack has happened. Then the youths will gather to blame security agencies for not acting fast after alerting them.

The whole society will now come out to condemn the killings while remaining silent in the earlier attacks which trigger the retaliation. The justification they always give for killing herder or attacking livestock is that it is an act of self defense. But HOW?

As it is there is no hope to break the cycle of violence when the society only demands justice for one victim while ignoring the suffering of another, while refusing to acknowledge all the actors and all the victims involved.

The tragedy of Plateau is that too many people have become trapped in narratives of FALSEHOOD. One side sees only its dead. The other side sees only its own losses. In between lies the truth, a long chain of attacks, reprisals, counter-reprisals, and unresolved grievances that continue to consume innocent lives, while youths who receive dollars to push false Propaganda continue to smile to the banks at the detriment of the lives of their people.

The greatest disservice being done to Plateau today is not merely the violence itself. It is the refusal by some commentators, activists, and sections of the media to examine the full picture.
Peace cannot be built on selective memory. Justice cannot be built on selective reporting.
And reconciliation cannot be built on narratives that recognize only some victims while erasing others.

If Plateau is ever to escape this endless cycle of bloodshed, every killing must matter. Every victim must count. Every attack must be investigated. And every perpetrator, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or affiliation, must be held accountable.

A society that can predict retaliation before it happens is a society trapped in a cycle it has failed to confront honestly.

The question is no longer whether there will be another reprisal.The question is whether Plateau is finally prepared to acknowledge the full truth behind the violence before more innocent people pay the price.

The month of Dhul-Hijjah has been confirmed to have begun. From Maghrib (sunset) tonight, the unrestricted Takbir for the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah commences.
This is a prophetic glad tiding for everyone who says the Takbir and Tahleel:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“No one has ever uttered the Talbiyah (Tahleel) except that he was given glad tidings, and no one has ever made the Takbir except that he was given glad tidings.”
It was asked: “O Messenger of Allah, with Paradise?”
He replied: “Yes.”
He ﷺ also said:
“There are no days greater in the sight of Allah, nor days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him, than these ten days. So increase in them the Tahleel (saying Laa ilaha illallah), the Takbir (saying Allahu Akbar), and the Tahmeed (saying Alhamdulillah).”
