I accept & understand the flaws that come with Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (🌟🌟🌟🌟), but damn it, I really like this movie. This film is both wildly endearing and wildly entertaining. I belong to the group of people who love Ben Affleck’s rendition of Bruce Wayne & although there are unavoidable issues with this film, Henry Cavill & Ben Affleck gave me everything I wanted from a movie like this. I’m not going to fight anyone who personally dislikes this movie because I understand where you’re coming from; all I can say is I stand by Batman vs. Superman.

Those of you who’ve followed me long enough know I’m not a comic book expert. I’m a casual comic book fan who’s enjoyed some parts of the comic-book takeover we’ve seen in Hollywood & hated other parts. I am not the foremost expert on this genre of film.

But it doesn’t mean I can’t have an opinion like everyone else & it doesn’t mean my film instincts don’t apply here. Although I don’t know the lore as well as some, I can tell you that this film’s story is its strength. The two, sometimes three, ongoing plot lines involving Superman, Batman, and Lex Luther, put so much meat on the bone up until the point of their final collision. Whether the story goes from Batman’s past to Superman’s present to Lex Luther’s future, this movie’s story always progresses forward.

The story’s strength mixed with Snyder’s born gift of visual storytelling is a powder keg. I think this film looks phenomenal & the technical aspects of this movie have aged exceptionally well since its 2016 release. I said this in my review of Man of Steel and I’ll say it here: Snyder raises the stakes with his visual skillset. He makes this story feel like life or death - this doesn’t feel like a half-comedic comic book movie. No, this is a self-serious story told in a self-serious manner.

But it’s the combination of the strong story, the visual creativity from Snyder, and ultimately the final ingredient that makes this film really work: Affleck & Cavill. Affleck is a brute. He’s lumbering. And you feel the weight of the world carried on his shoulders. I thought Affleck served as the perfect counter weight to Cavill. Their moments on screen together, whether as Superman and Batman or Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne, are absolutely electric.

I do have to mention two flaws that can’t be ignored: Jesse Eisenberg & Gal Gadot. Neither belong in this film. Eisneberg’s Luther feels directionless & a totally missed opportunity for a great villain to step between Affleck & Cavill, something we do not get here. Lastly, and I mean this with my entire chest- Gal Gadot is one of the worst actors I’ve ever seen in my life. I could drop this film down to 3 stars simply from Gadot’s presence alone. She is so unavoidably bad in this movie, it nearly tanked the entire operation.

I don’t agree the hate around this film. I never have, I never will.
