Statement by #Eritrea's Delegation at 20th Extraordinary Summit of the African Union Assembly on Health; Accra, 22 July 2026

&"...Eritrea considers health as a fundamental human right. Guided by the principle of social justice, Eritrea is committed to ensuring that every citizen - regardless of where they live - has equitable access to quality healthcare at nominal cost or free of charge".

*"...One of the areas where Eritrea has made significant progress is maternal and newborn health. The country has placed mothers and newborns at the center of its national development agenda through sustained investment in a resilient and expanding healthcare system. Coverage of antenatal care has steadily improved, with the proportion of pregnant women receiving at least one skilled antenatal consultation increasing from 83 percent in 2022 to 87 percent in 2025. Facility-based deliveries also rose significantly - from 73 percent to 85 percent over the same period - reflecting growing confidence in the health system and improved access to skilled birth attendance. At the same time, Eritrea expanded surgical capacity in zonal hospitals, increasing the national Caesarean section rate from 3.8 percent to 6.5 percent by 2025, bringing it within the World Health Organization’s recommended range of 5 to 15 percent".

#Condolences: Veteran freedom fighter and seasoned diplomat, Minister Semere Russom, has passed away at the age of 83 due to illness.

Btsai Semere joined the EPLF in 1976 and served his nation and people in various capacities with exemplary dedication and distinction for almost half a century.

During the liberation struggle, Btsai Semere served as a Representative of the EPLF's Foreign Relations Department, and later, Head of Intelligence Services in the EPLF Office in Khartoum.

After independence, Btsai Semere was appointed as the First Secretary of the Provisional Government of Eritrea (PGE) in Sudan from 1991-1992; Director General for the American Desk in the Foreign Office from 1993-1996; Eritrea's Ambassador to the US from 1997-2003; Governor of Central Region from 2003-2006; and Minister of Education from 2007 until 2025.

Minister Semere Russom was also appointed and simultaneously served as Eritrea's Ambassador to Ethiopia from 2018 - 2025.

Al-Burhan Arrives in Asmara for Talks With Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki on Bilateral Relations and Regional Stability

Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, arrived in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, on Friday, July 17, 2026, on a fraternal visit reflecting the close ties between the Sudanese and Eritrean peoples.

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki received al-Burhan at Asmara International Airport.

The two leaders reviewed the course of bilateral relations between Sudan and Eritrea and discussed ways to expand cooperation between Khartoum and Asmara across various fields. They also stressed the importance of strengthening the longstanding fraternal ties between the two peoples.

The visit reflects Sudan’s commitment to reinforcing relations with neighbouring Eritrea, as well as the level of coordination between the two countries’ leaderships on regional and international issues and efforts to promote security and stability across the region.

The visit also carries added significance amid rising tensions in the Horn of Africa, particularly between Eritrea and Ethiopia, and at a time when relations between Khartoum and Addis Ababa have become increasingly strained. The Sudanese Armed Forces have openly accused Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates of involvement in drone attacks targeting locations inside Sudan. Investigations by Reuters and Middle East Eye, reports by Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab, and open-source evidence have also documented the use of Ethiopian territory for training and supply activities linked to the Rapid Support Forces militia and supported by the UAE.

Al-Burhan’s visit to Asmara highlights the importance of Sudanese-Eritrean relations, which are underpinned by longstanding historical and social ties, shared interests, and common political and security challenges facing the wider region.
