For a while now, I have received reports of cartels exploiting people with disabilities by bringing them from neighboring countries, including Tanzania, to beg for money on the streets of Nairobi.

These individuals are housed in overcrowded single rooms and, very early every morning sometimes as early as 4:00 a.m. they are dropped off at designated locations within the CBD. Throughout the day, they are left to beg, while handlers monitor them and later collect the money on their behalf. Investigations have revealed that many of them use the same M-Pesa numbers, indicating the existence of organized networks benefiting from their suffering.

Today, I came across one of these individuals, and his story appeared to follow a familiar pattern. Over time, I have noticed that many of them tell almost identical stories, raising concerns that they may have been coached on what to say in order to attract sympathy and donations from members of the public. Most of them give the same explanation about how they ended up on the streets and why they need help.

This is wrong and unacceptable. People with disabilities should not be used as tools for enriching cartels. They deserve dignity, protection, empowerment, and opportunities to earn a living in a humane and respectable manner.

I urge the relevant authorities to investigate this matter thoroughly and take firm action against those responsible. Those behind these schemes must be held accountable, while the victims should be rescued, protected, and supported to live with dignity.
