City leadership have chosen not to act on a range of issues. The owner of my local corner store told me this morning that he had received a $1,000 fine from the city because one of his items was missing a pricing label. @LondonBreed
Every neighborhood in San Francisco except 2 has seen a steep decline in tax revenue this year. The denialists will say it's because retail patterns have changed. I used to believe that. But it's bullshit. It's all about homelessness and public safety. And there's proof. 🧵
@shellenberger It’s a tale of 2 cities again, downtown SF vs. real neighborhoods (like Hayes Valley, which is vibrant.)
What’s being exposed is the lack of resilience of urban areas that are not mixed use - once office workers, tourists, and convention visitors disappear, everything collapses.
@bett_yu@KPIXtv Gap/Old Navy have been in decline for a while in the face of major competition from “fast fashion” competitors like Uniqlo and H&M, who, by the way, are NOT closing their downtown SF stores.
The last paragraph doesn’t make any sense. Downtown San Francisco is just one of 30+ districts. The majority of these other neighborhoods are still vibrant, even more so now that people are working from home. The whole city’s not going to fail just because downtown is failing.
❗️ We were attacked by Kremlin bots
About 10 thousand Kremlin bots have subscribed to our account in the last 24 hours. Soon they will start mass unsubscribing so that Twitter algorithms will not promote our posts and account.
We have seen similar attacks on the accounts of other independent media and Influencers from many countries.
There is only one purpose of the attack: to suppress the truth.
Now we need your help in the information war against Putin's bot farms. Help us spread our posts and the posts of other independent media through likes, reposts and comments.
Thanks to everyone for the help!
Another neighborhood store in SF shuts down due to vandalism and break ins:
“After repeated break-in attempts over the last year, and more broken windows than we can count, we recently made the tough decision to close down the High Road Bike Shop.”
My question is how do you solve the crime / open air drug markets / social collapse problem in SF?
You have absolutely horrific conditions across large swaths of downtown and the mission and I’m really at a loss for how to address it.
As localism catches on and across all different shades in the political spectrum, we will see a resurgence of local retail...smaller stores. If you want a burger go to a non-chain joint!
“we’re selling each other a performance of our lives but also literally selling each other clothing, knick knacks, books. That colliding with the aging demographic makes it all a pretty soulless dull experience.” https://t.co/sNkvTkaUky
