David, you’re more knowledgeable than this, so I can assume you’re the one trying to run a PsyOps here.
First, you’re mashing two contradictory arguments. The first argument says: GEJ was a bad president whom Nigerians were justifiably upset with but, confronted by Buhari, we should have held our noses and voted for GEJ.
The second argument says: GEJ was a very good president, but majority of Nigerians were brainwashed by the CIA into believing he was bad.
Both arguments are contradictory. If you stick to the first argument, this is a rational opinion, and we can have debates all day long about people’s choices in 2015 in the face of two bad options. But if you add the second argument, then your point is not just ahistorical, it is also irrational.
So, let’s look at that. There were hardliner Northern Muslims who would never have voted a Southern Christian and hardliner Southern Christians who will never vote a Northern Muslim, both regardless of policy and personality. There were also APC and PDP party loyalists. So, this so-called PsyOps could only have conveniently affected swing voters in between the partisan extremes. Yet, this same swing voters had rejected Buhari three times at the general polls. What changed? GEJ effed up: he was an elite pleaser president who tried to run with the hares and hunt with the hounds and he lost the trust of one and the respect of the other.
And so, public opinion against GEJ had cemented way BEFORE APC was formed or Buhari ever emerged as candidate. Buhari and APC were beneficiaries of demonstrable public discontent – they were not some psychological genius engineers of the discontent. If they were that clever, why have they not been able to engineer the same mass hysteria against Atiku or Peter Obi? Why have they resorted to good old vote buying, ballot fixing and thuggery to stay in power? Yes, they took advantage of PDP’s incompetence and GEJ’s weaknesses, but why not blame the PARTY and GOVT in POWER for failing? Why are you blaming these swing voters for expressing their discontent?
Second, were there other interests at play in all these? Yes. We don’t need a conspiracy theory to know this. We all saw Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) politicians take advantage of Occupy Nigeria (long before Buhari). But rather than blame PDP for imploding their own political machinery, you blame Nigerians.
Yes, the US meddled AF. But Nigeria isn't unique to American political meddling. They do this all over the world. Their success in any country is dependent on whether the person in power is weak-willed or decisive, but rather than see GEJ for what he was, you choose to infantilise him and you blame Nigerians.
I have always been clear that Nigerians disliked GEJ for many good reasons. Let me remind you of what we saw with our own eyes. By 2014, Nigeria was a kill-fest for Boko Haram, from the Borno Massacre to the Abuja and Kano bomb blasts. Terrorists were being apprehended in Lagos. Public paranoia was at an all time high. Three whole states were practically lost and being governed under the flag of Boko Haram. Do you forget all the bumbling, denials, and then confirmation around the Chibok girls? The NIS recruitment stampede that outraged Nigerians and GEJ did nothing about Abba Moro? The stupid centenary celebration that wasted resources to give Lugard a posthumous national award? Have you forgotten how the military went gaga with power that period because they answered to no one? The daily drama of headlines featuring Alamieyeseigha, Tompolo, Dokubo, Obanikoro, Femi Fani-Kayode, Okupe, Maku and Abati? All those folks?
Look, Nigerians didn't suddenly go stupid and seek Buhari and put him in power. Nigerians had already rejected Buhari THRICE at the general polls when better candidates were presented to them. If Nigerians had had the opportunity of choosing between Peter Obi and GEJ they would have voted Peter Obi. What we had was GEJ and Buhari: two bad options. We can accept this truth without lying that GEJ was a misunderstood great man and we were all victims of some exaggerated American led PsyOps.
GEJ effed up as president. That should not be hard to say. The swing voters erroneously also allowed their frustrations with GEJ to accept Buhari when they had rejected him before. This is not hard to say. We can whip ourselves over this if that makes anyone feel better. This debate isn't about defending why people voted Buhari. It is about interrogating an attempt to rewrite a history we lived through.
Third, as for whipping the swing voters. You cannot flog people more than they have already flogged themselves on this issue. Many people have self-flagellated several times over their support of or vote for Buhari in their anger against GEJ. Even those of us who hated Buhari but still just wanted to vote put GEJ have realised this error. So do you want to just keep whipping that dead horse? Fine, we are whipped thoroughly. We have spent the last eight years pushing back against the damage from APC. We have done #EndSARS, screamed ourselves hoarse, supported Peter Obi, some of us rejected offers to join govt and terminated former friendships. What point again are you trying to prove? That GEJ was never bad, and we were all victims of brainwashing? No.
If anything is a PsyOps, it is this attempt to convince millions of Nigerians that all they saw and experienced under GEJ did not happen and it was just a figment of fiction from CIA backrooms on the level of QAnon Deep State conspiracy. This is absolute nonsense but unfortunately, people love a conspiracy theory.
