@flyethiopian latest results are more than a measure of airline performance. They reflect Ethiopia’s growing role in connecting African markets, linking the continent with the world, and creating new pathways for trade, tourism and investment.

In the first half of its 2025/26 financial year, Ethiopian Airlines reported $4.4 billion in revenue, a 14% year-on-year increase. The airline carried 10.64 million passengers, transported 451,000 tonnes of cargo, and expanded its global network to 145 international destinations.

The growth of Ethiopian Airlines is being matched by major investments in the future of aviation, including the $12.5 billion Bishoftu International Airport, designed to support large-scale passenger growth and strengthen Ethiopia’s position as a global aviation hub.

From moving people and goods to opening new connections between economies, Ethiopian Airlines demonstrates how African institutions can grow at global scale and contribute to a more connected continent.

The African Union’s 49th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council opened in Addis Ababa on Tuesday with calls for a stronger African role in global decision-making, greater financial independence, and renewed efforts to address the continent’s security and development challenges.

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf said the meeting comes amid heightened global uncertainty, with shifting geopolitical dynamics affecting African economies. He also expressed concern over the continued spread of terrorism and violent extremism across parts of the continent.

Chairperson of the Executive Council and Burundi’s Foreign Minister Édouard Bizimana said Africa’s membership in the G20 represents a historic milestone, urging the continent to move beyond being a participant in global systems and play a greater role in shaping international policies and standards.

Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos called for the African Union to become a more strategic institution capable of advancing Africa’s interests on the global stage. He highlighted the need for stronger political ownership of AU reforms, financial sustainability, and responsible management of Africa’s resources.

The two-day Executive Council session is also reviewing progress on Agenda 2063, including the AU’s 2026 theme on sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems. Ministers are expected to consider reports and adopt decisions on institutional reforms, AU legal instruments, international representation, and preparations for future continental engagements.

It is with great pride that I join you today at the opening ceremony of this historic National Dialogue. This grand conference, which will bring together four thousand participants under one roof in the coming weeks, marks a historic opportunity for Ethiopia to obtain the “pen and parchment” with which to write a new chapter of its history by its own hand.

We are at a moment when we can break the cycle in Ethiopia’s political journey. A cycle that begins with inflammatory rhetoric and ends in violent action, and replace it with dialogue and discussion. I extend my sincere gratitude to the commissioners of the National Dialogue Commission for their invaluable contributions toward making this important undertaking possible.

This conference, which is founded on a bottom-up agenda-setting process involving hundreds of thousands of citizens, is a rare and remarkable event with immense significance in Ethiopia’s modern history. Through it, we have the opportunity to transform our challenges into opportunities and establish a lasting culture of peaceful transfers of power.

Today, we are planting good seeds that will benefit future generations, and we are ensuring that our children will enjoy the fruits they bear. As we participate in this dialogue, if we set aside our local interests and deliberate for the sake of Ethiopia, keeping our children and their future in mind, the outcome will be truly fruitful.

Together, let us cultivate hope, forgiveness, and peaceful coexistence. By resolving our differences through dialogue and reconciliation within our own country, let us safeguard Ethiopia from external interference. I call upon all participants to achieve a historic outcome; one that will benefit Ethiopia, serve as an example for Africa, and bring genuine peace and relief to all Ethiopians.
