Ukraine's steel production could drop by half if Russia captures a vital mine 10 km west of Pokrovsk.

The Pokrovske coal mine is the largest coking coal producer in Ukraine and one of the largest in Eastern Europe.

It produces coal for coke production needed in steelmaking, which is Ukraine's second-largest source of currency after agriculture. The value of Ukrainian steel products stood at nearly $2 billion in the first eight months of 2024.

Ukrainian steelmakers were planning to increase production from 7.5 millions tons this year to more than 10 million in 2025.

If the mine in Pokrovsk is lost, it won't be possible to produce more than 2-3 million tons according to Oleksandr Kalenkov, the head of Ukraine's steelmakers' association.
