This is another very important phenomenon. It is very much a real scenario and it is not even rare. Let me explain this post also in a Q&A format.

Q. What is this condition?

• Acute Water Intoxication (Severe Dilutional Hyponatremia).

​Q. What exactly happened?

• ​Sweating heavily caused him to lose both water and sodium.
​Chugging 5 liters of plain water severely diluted the remaining sodium in his blood.

• ​To balance this extreme dilution, water rapidly rushed into his body's cells, making them swell.

​• The problem is Brain cells cannot expand inside the rigid skull. This massive swelling caused crushing pressure (cerebral edema), seizures, and brain herniation.

​Q. Could he have been saved?

• Yes! If rushed to the casualty, we would immediately push Hypertonic Saline (3% NaCl) IV to pull the deadly excess water out of his swollen brain cells.

​Q. How to avoid it?

• ​Never chug massive amounts of plain water quickly.

• ​After heavy sweating, replace electrolytes (ORS, coconut water), not just plain water.

Children and adults who drink water with high levels of Manganese for a long time may have problems with memory, attention, and motor skills. Infants (babies under one year old) may develop learning & behavior problems if they consume water with too much 'Mn' in it.
