A particularly meaningful moment of the commemorations was the unveiling of a new memorial plaque at the crash site near Schoonheten.
The plaque, placed near the location where Wellington Z8339 fell on 19-20 June 1942, ensures the crew’s story remains present in the landscape and memory of the region. The IPN delegation laid a wreath in tribute to the fallen airmen.
The commemorations brought together an international group of participants, including: representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in the Netherlands, including Colonel Janusz Sroka, Defence Attaché, local Dutch authorities and community organisations historians and civic activists, family members of the crew, military personel from Poznań representing the Mobile Air Operations Command Unit (MJDOP), continuing the traditions of No. 305 Polish Bomber Squadron “Land of Greater Poland”
More than 84 years after the crash, the ceremony reaffirmed a shared Polish-Dutch commitment to remembrance, preserved through cooperation between institutions, local communities and families in both countries.
Honouring the crew of Wellington Mk II Z8339 of No. 305 Polish Bomber Squadron - a shared Polish-Dutch memory.
On 20 June 2026, an IPN delegation took part in commemorations in Raalte and Schoonheten marking the 84th anniversary of the aircraft’s loss. On the night of 19–20 June 1942, the crew was returning from a bombing mission against Osnabrück when their aircraft was intercepted by a German night fighter and crashed near Schoonheten. Only one crew member survived. Those who lost their lives: Pilot Alojzy Paweł Gusowski, Navigator Henryk Aleksander Jankiewicz, Wireless Operator Kazimierz Jan Ardelli, Air Gunner Marian Jan Świderski
The programme included remembrance ceremonies in Raalte cemetery, a historical meeting at the Town Hall (with the presentation of a book by historian Krzysztof Kowalkowski), a service at the Basilica of the Holy Cross Exaltation, and the unveiling of a new memorial plaque at the crash site.
At the Town Hall, a letter from IPN Deputy President Karol Polejowski was read, in which he expressed: 📜 “Let me express my warm gratitude to the Municipality of Raalte for cultivating the memory of Polish airmen during annual celebrations and caring for their eternal resting place.”
@almurray@WeHaveWaysPod@ww2headquarters Journey to the Horizon from Hans Onderwater MBE and Brian Lissette tells the fascinating story of the last air crew to escape to Spain. Hans interviewed veterans and families himself. One of them crashes during a football match and mingles with the public! Happy to provide a copy

Organised by Raalte Foundation for Freedom in cooperation with the Polish Institute of National Remembrance (IPN)
On 20 June 2025, we cordially invite you to the opening of the international exhibition Trails of Hope. The Odyssey of Freedom.
This impressive exhibition tells the story of Polish soldiers and civilians during World War II and their fight for freedom. Previously on display in London, New York and Johannesburg, and now in Raalte to highlight the importance of freedom and solidarity.
We also reflect on the role of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) in the resistance and commemorate the crash of the Polish Wellington Z8339 on 20 June 1942 near Raalte, in which four crew members died. Also opening is Arnhem Postal History's False Hope and Lasting Thanks exhibition.
Special speakers and participants from the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium and the United States, including representatives of the OSS Society, Arnhem Postal History, the Polish delegation and relatives of veterans and resistance participants, join us in reflecting on resistance, international solidarity and the sacrifices of our liberators.

Remembering the Battle of the Bulge
On Dec. 16, 1944, one of the most brutal engagements of World War II began: the Battle of the Bulge.
The battle raged for over a month, with 600,000 American soldiers fighting through snow and ice.
By the end, over 19,000 Americans had given their lives — the largest loss of U.S. troops in a single battle during the war.
This month, join us as we honor the men and women who fought to preserve freedom during the Battle of the Bulge.
