A new report from The Game Business says Microsoft’s Xbox restructuring could be even bigger than expected.

According to the report:

>Xbox plans to cut around 3,200 jobs.

>Double Fine and Compulsion Games are expected to become independent studios again. Microsoft will reportedly help fund their next projects while they seek new investors, and both studios would keep their IP and back catalog.

>Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have reportedly found new owners, although the deals haven’t closed yet.
The buyers would take over the studios along with their IP and back catalog. Both studios are still expected to release games next year.

>Arkane Lyon has reportedly entered negotiations for a similar deal, with Microsoft hoping to avoid shutting the studio down.

Microsoft has not officially confirmed these reported studio changes.

✅Sony announced that they won’t be issuing physical discs for games from January 2028 and beyond.

✅They also announced permanent shut down of PS3 and PS Vita stores from late 2026 to July 2027 (depending on region).

✅Massive outrage ensued, driven by concerns over game ownership and the very likely threat of games being removed and players paying a full purchase price when it’s technically just a license that can be revoked at any time without compensation.

✅Outrage persisted with people sharing their love for physical media and showing their collections of game discs from different eras, with many cancelling PlayStation Plus and their digital pre-orders of GTA6 and the likes

✅Hideo Kojima expressed disappointment regarding the loss of physical media yesterday, and he has expressed concerns over media ownership and access now, and back in 2021, a post which has resurfaced and gone viral with recent events jumping from 2K to over 27K reports in a day

No official statement has been made as of this moment regarding what’s next, but this is beyond just an internet bubble being upset.

This is a cultural shift that impacts the whole entertainment industry in terms of media distribution, ownership, pricing, competition, second hand market and monopoly, dynamic pricing and lack of healthy competition and alternatives for players.

PlayStation updated its Terms of Service in April 2026, and Section 21 outlines how inactive PSN accounts may be closed.

> If a PSN account remains inactive for 36 months, Sony may begin the account closure process. The account holder will receive an email notification and has 6 months to sign in or request that the account remain active.

> If no action is taken and the account is closed, access to PlayStation Network services will end.

>Any digital purchases tied to that account, including games, DLC, and other digital content, will no longer be accessible.

According to the Terms of Service, this process is irreversible.

Many players are sharing screenshots of their cancelled subscriptions online, this is one of the few ways gamers can send a clear message to Sony that they want games on physical discs.
