I’m taking a break from Smash
After TGX, I'm going take a 2 month break from Smash
There are two main reasons for this: I'm not having fun playing the game anymore and I want to dedicate my time to other things...
Starting with fun. I think playing Smash can be fun for 2 reasons: playing with friends and playing to compete. I started playing Smash at uni with 15 people gathered around a one couch setup almost every day, what would eventually become JML, and it was phenomenal vibes.
But losing means that I'm not having fun, and if I'm not having fun, then I should stop no? I've gone through this cycle too many times, thought about quitting/ retiring and wondering if maybe thats the best choice for me in this stage of my life...
So yeah, not practicing means I've stopped doing well competively at least to my standards; Which is fair, I was never a talented player, I only got better the more I played and as time passes, I expect those who dedicate themself to the game to outdo me...
More than that, I feel a lack of drive. I don't play online due to bad net, I don't watch any Smash competive sets or work on my notes & gameplans as I used to. Even when I go to tourneys, I'd rather head home than wait 30 mins to try and grab friendlies...
But with time spent doing night shifts, spending holidays with my wonderful partner, seeing my friends, spending time with family and pursing other hobbies like D&D and playing pokemon, I feel like I don't have the time to focus on improving my play.
Despite my years competing, in all honesty, I like the people in the scene but I don't feel close enough to anyone to call them my friends. I know this is my own fault in my lack of effort to socialise, and I was okay with it, as long as I could have fun with the competive side.
It was a fun distraction from my studies and other life events. I transitioned into competive and I liked seeing myself rise through the ranks, going from 0-2, to 2-2, HM's to top 40 and breaking even into top 20.
A farewell to Creature and TSG for 2025 and the wins get shared around!
