I'll explain the issue with MDR in stockbroking with a simple example. Say a customer transfers ₹5 lakh to his trading account. At 0.02%, the broker pays ₹100 in MDR. Now imagine he doesn't trade at all.

Under SEBI's compulsory running account settlement rules, brokers must return the ₹5 lakh to his bank account. A few weeks later, he wants to trade, so he transfers the same ₹5 lakh back. Another ₹100 MDR. The next settlement cycle comes around, we return it again, and when he wants to trade later, he transfers it back. Another ₹100.

So the same ₹15 lakh can generate ₹300 or more in MDR without a single trade or any corresponding purchase-related revenue for the broker. According to me, it doesn't make economic sense if stockbrokers will be repeatedly charged like this for movement of customers' capital, that are already aligned with regulatory requirements which were introduced to protect retail investors.

I sincerely hope GOI reconsiders this. 🙏
