In defense of Indian 🇮🇳 democracy!

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi most successful visit to Norway a minor incident happened. A Norwegian journalist demanded that the prime minister starts holding press conferences. She claimed that Indian democracy is in bad shape.

May be its time to pause? May be its time to be a bit curious to the world’s largest democracy?

Two weeks ago five Indian states and territories held elections. The turn out in the battlefield state of West Bengal was 94%. In the last local election in Norway it was 62%, in many European local elections turn out is below 50%. Can voting in massive numbers be a signal Indians trust their democratic process?

In the same election BJP won big in Assam and West Bengal. It lost even bigger in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Can this diversity be a signal that Indian democracy is reflecting the will of the people?

The journalist referred to a democracy ranking putting India at 157 in the world, behind many dictatorships and deeply troubled states. When a ranking is so obviously contrary to common sense, why not ask critical questions to those making the ranking rather than demand that leaders shall comment on nonsense? I recommend Salvatore Babones book “Dharma democracy”. The book debunks convincingly the flawed methodology of these rankings.

It was referred to a ranking claiming it’s very dangerous to be a journalist in India. Reality is that it is more dangerous to be journalist in the US and far more dangerous in the vast majority of other nations in the world.

Let’s be real. India is not perfect. Of course there are incidents. India has a population the size of North America, South America and Europe combined. But India is much more peaceful than Europe or the Americas. That’s remarkable - given the ethnic, language and religious diversity of India and the many development challenges.

Unless we consider democracy a form of government only suited for some very small, peaceful and homogeneous Western European nations, may be we should commend Indian democracy?

India is the only major former UK colony which became and has remained a democracy. Its sometimes claimed that the Brits taught India democracy. If that was the case why isn’t Myanmar or Pakistan or the Gulf kingdoms democracies??? Reality is that Indian democracy is both homegrown and extraordinary successful.

कल एक बीजेपी शुभचिंतक ने ट्वीट किया कि भले ही बीजेपी असम और बंगाल पर खुश हो रही हो, पर तमिलनाडु में बेहद खराब प्रदर्शन हुआ है। उसपर चिंता होनी चाहिए।

उसपर जवाब आया कि तमिलनाडु में इस बार एक सीट लाए हैं, कोई बात नहीं। अगली बार 10 ले आयेंगे। बंगाल में भी तो 3 से पहले 77 फिर 206 तक पहुँचे न पंद्रह साल में! यहाँ भी पहुँच जाएँगे। टाइम की कमी नहीं है इनके पास! लोगों की कमी नहीं है।

दिक्कत क्या है पता है? समाजवादी पार्टी बनती है तो मुलायम सिंह और उनका परिवार चलाते रहते हैं। बसपा बनती है तो मायावती चलाती रहती हैं। पंजाब की अकालीदल भी बादलों के झुंड में सिमटकर रह जाती है।

कॉंग्रेस तो परिवारवाद से बदनाम है ही, परिवार में एक करप्ट निकल गया, पूरी आइडीआलजी धरी रह जाती है।

वहीं बीजेपी को देखिए, एक बड़े नेता की छत्रछाया में पार्टी बनती है, 10 साल होते-होते दूसरा बड़ा नेता तैयार हो जाता है, फिर तीसरा, फिर चौथा।

अभी नरेंद्र मोदी सर्वेसर्वा हैं तो लगता है कि इनके बाद बीजेपी का क्या होगा? कभी यही चीज़ अटल जी के लिए लगती थी कि शायद उनके जाते ही पार्टी नहीं रहेगी। पर न जी! बीजेपी के पास चेहरों की कमी नहीं।

बाक़ी लोग एक ही परिवार लेकर आए दिन आइडीआलजी बदलते रहते हैं, बीजेपी में चेहरे बदलते रहते हैं पर आइडीआलजी एक ही रहती है।

असल में ये सिर्फ एक पार्टी होती तो इसमें भी परिवारवाद आ जाता। पर ये पार्टी चलती है आरएसएस से, आरएसएस को जानने की कोशिश करो तो पता चलता है कि 15 साल में बंगाल हासिल करना तो बहुत आसान टारगेट था, ये तगड़े लोग तो 1925 से अखंड भारत का मिशन लेकर चल रहे हैं और पता नहीं आगे कितने सालों तक इसे चलाते रहेंगे!

अच्छा ये भी ग़ौर करने वाली बात है कि अबतक बीजेपी ने जो दो प्रधानमंत्री बनाए, दोनों की कोई औलाद नहीं। क्या ये इत्तेफाक़ है? अभी तीसरे में योगी आए तो ये कन्फर्म हो जायेगा कि आरएसएस किसी पारिवारिक आदमी को शीर्ष गद्दी देना ही नहीं चाहता। और ग़ैरशादीशुदाओं की, संघ के लिए पूरी तरह समर्पित
सेवकों की इनके पास कमी ही नहीं है।

पूरे देश में आरएसएस की 75 हज़ार से ज़्यादा शाखाएं हैं, 40 लाख से अधिक एक्टिव मेम्बर्स हैं... हमारी आर्मी, रिजर्व मिलाकर 22 लाख पर्सनेल की है, पर आरएसएस के पास 40 लाख स्वयंसेवक हैं!

आप देख रहे हो तैयारी का लेवल? इतने बवाल के बावजूद 500 शाखाएं तो सिर्फ जम्मू कश्मीर में हैं।

रिपोर्ट्स बताती हैं की पाक्सतां में आईएसआई को रॉ से ज़्यादा नफ़रत आरएसएस से है तो कोई कारण है इसका।

एक सोच, एक आइडीआलजी, जिससे आप सहमत होवो या न होवो, पर तारीफ़ के काबिल बात है कि पिछले 100 साल से उस मशाल को लगभग बिना करप्ट हुए पास करती ही जा रही है। बाक़ी पार्टीज़ भले ही आरएसएस नफ़रत करें, पर इनसे कुछ सीखें भी तो!

क्योंकि ऐसा संगठन अगर तमिलनाडु में एक और केरल में 3 सीट्स ले आया है तो चिंता संगठन को नहीं बाक़ी पार्टीज़ को होनी चाहिए। क्योंकि भले ही 20 साल और लगाने पड़ जाएँ, ये दक्षिण भारत में भी अपने झंडे लहरा के ही मानेंगे।

Anyone with even an iota of political knowledge knows what hpnd to the Vajpayee govt in 1996. BJP was the single largest party at the Centre & even after getting the President’s approval, Vajpayee had to resign within 13 days coz other parties refused support.

Even in MH 2019, President’s Rule was imposed for 13 days coz no party could immediately prove majority. Governor first asked BJP to form govt, but BJP despite having almost double the seats of Congress or NCP individually refused, saying they didn’t have numbers.

Do you see the maturity there?

Now come to TN. A 234 seats means majority mark is 118. TVK is at 108. Even with Congress support, they still fall short by around 5 seats... In fact, Vijay’s situation is far worse than both Vajpayee 1996 & MH 2019 coz even after coalition, the alliance still doesn’t reach majority on paper... So how exactly is Governor the villain here for asking proof of majority to command the Assembly as per Article 164 of the Constitution?

Best part is, even DMK or AIADMK are not creating the level of outrage Congress ecosystem created in Karnataka 2018 against BJP. They are being mature enough to let TVK find more allies and prove numbers peacefully.

So what exactly do people want here?
To make Vijay CM first & then watch another Vajpayee-1996 or Fadnavis-style collapse happen within days ?
