August 18, 1996. Gary Webb's byline appeared in the San Jose Mercury News above a story that would make him famous, then destroy him, then possibly kill him.
The investigation had taken over a year. Webb had traveled to Nicaragua, interviewed drug dealers in prison, obtained court documents, traced money flows, and uncovered a network that connected CIA-backed guerrillas to cocaine dealers to Los Angeles street gangs.
What he found was this: During the 1980s, while the Reagan administration was funding a secret war in Nicaragua, some of the "freedom fighters" they were backing were also running cocaine into California. The profits funded their war. The cocaine became crack. And the crack devastated Black neighborhoods across Los Angeles.
The CIA knew. Or should have known. Or looked the other way.
Webb called his series "Dark Alliance."
Gary Stephen Webb was born in Corona, California, in 1955. His father was a Marine sergeant, so the family moved constantly. Webb grew up learning to adapt, to observe, to ask questions that made adults uncomfortable.
He became a journalist because he was good at making people uncomfortable.
By 1996, Webb had spent sixteen years building a reputation. He'd won over thirty journalism awards. He'd exposed corruption in local government, police misconduct, real estate fraud. He'd been part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize.
He was good at his job. Relentless. The kind of reporter who wouldn't drop a story just because powerful people wanted him to.
The Dark Alliance series ran across three days in August 1996. Twenty thousand words documenting how Nicaraguan drug traffickers had supplied cocaine to Los Angeles dealers, how those dealers had turned it into crack and sold it in South Central, how the money had flowed back to fund the Contras—the rebel army the CIA was supporting in their fight against Nicaragua's socialist government.
Webb's editors at the Mercury News did something revolutionary: they posted the entire investigation online. Full text. Supporting documents. Audio interviews. Source materials.
And they designed a website logo showing a man smoking crack with the CIA seal behind him.
The story went viral before "viral" was a term anyone used. Over a million people a day visited the site. The Mercury News, a mid-sized California paper, suddenly had more web traffic than The New York Times.
Black communities across America erupted. Town halls filled with angry citizens demanding answers. How could the government allow drugs to flood their neighborhoods? How could the CIA protect drug dealers?
Congresswoman Maxine Waters held hearings. The Justice Department launched an investigation. The CIA promised to look into it.
And then the backlash began.
The Los Angeles Times put seventeen reporters on the story. Not to follow up on Webb's leads. To discredit him.
The Washington Post published multiple articles questioning Webb's sources. The New York Times ran pieces suggesting Webb had overstated his case, implied things he couldn't prove, connected dots that shouldn't be connected.
The criticism focused on precision. Webb had written that a drug ring "sold tons of cocaine" to L.A. gangs and "funneled millions" to the Contras. Critics said he'd exaggerated the scale. Webb had written the Contras were "run by" the CIA. Critics said that implied direct management when the relationship was more complicated.
But the larger critique was worse: Webb, they suggested, was a conspiracy theorist. He was implying the CIA deliberately orchestrated crack cocaine's spread into Black neighborhoods. That's not what Webb had written, but it's what critics claimed he'd implied.
The attacks worked.
In May 1997, the Mercury News caved. Executive Editor Jerry Ceppos published a column essentially apologizing for Dark Alliance. The series, he wrote, "fell short of our standards" in several areas.
Webb was furious. His editors were backing away from a story they'd vetted, fact-checked, and proudly published nine months earlier.
He was reassigned to a bureau in Cupertino, more than 150 miles from his family home. The message was clear: shut up and accept your punishment, or leave.
Webb chose to leave. He resigned in November 1997.
He expanded his reporting into a book—Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion—published in May 1998. It was more thorough than the original series, with additional sources and documentation.
Two months later, in September 1998, the CIA's Inspector General released a report on CIA knowledge of Contra drug trafficking.
The report confirmed that dozens of Contras and Contra-related entities had been involved in drug trafficking. It confirmed that CIA officials had received reports of this trafficking and failed to investigate or act. It confirmed that the Justice Department had agreed not to share certain drug enforcement information with the CIA—essentially creating a protection for CIA assets involved in drugs.
In other words: Gary Webb had been right.
But the report was released during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Clinton's impeachment dominated every news cycle. The major newspapers that had spent months attacking Webb barely mentioned the Inspector General's findings.
Webb's vindication was buried.
No major newspaper would hire him. His marriage collapsed under the strain—Susan Bell divorced him in 2000. He sold freelance pieces where he could. Eventually he took a job at a small free weekly paper in Sacramento, covering local government meetings.
From Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter to community news writer in four years.
Webb sold his house to pay debts. He arranged to move back in with his mother. On December 9, 2004, he was packing.
The next morning, December 10, moving company workers arrived at his rental house in Carmichael. There was a note taped to the door: "Please do not enter. Call 911 for assistance. Thank you."
They called 911. Police found Webb's body in the bedroom.
Two gunshot wounds to the head.
The Sacramento County Coroner initially reported a gunshot wound—singular—to the head. When the Sacramento Bee reported Webb had died from multiple gunshots, the coroner's office was flooded with calls.
Coroner Robert Lyons issued a clarification: Gary Webb died from two self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head. A suicide note was found at the scene. The manner of death was suicide.
The internet immediately questioned how someone shoots themselves in the head twice.
Lyons explained: It's uncommon but possible. If the first shot isn't immediately fatal, a person may pull the trigger again. It happens in about 4% of firearm suicides.
Susan Bell, Webb's ex-wife, said she believed it was suicide. "Looking back," she told reporters, "I think Gary had been obsessed with suicide for some time."
Webb's brother said Gary had been depressed, financially ruined, professionally destroyed.
The conspiracy theories persist anyway. A journalist who exposed CIA drug connections found dead under suspicious circumstances—it writes itself.
But maybe the simpler explanation is worse: Gary Webb told the truth. Major newspapers destroyed him for it. His career ended. His marriage ended. His money ran out. And on a December morning in 2004, alone in a rental house he was being evicted from, Gary Webb decided he'd had enough.
Ten years later, in 2014, Hollywood made a movie about him. "Kill the Messenger," starring Jeremy Renner. It portrayed Webb as a hero destroyed by institutional journalism protecting institutional power.
The film sparked renewed debate: Were the major newspapers right to criticize Webb's reporting? Or were they protecting the CIA?
Here's what's not debatable: Gary Webb reported that CIA-backed Contras were involved in cocaine trafficking that fueled the crack epidemic. The CIA's Inspector General later confirmed this was true. But Webb lost everything while the institutions he exposed faced no consequences.
He died at forty-nine with two bullets in his head.
The coroner called it suicide. Maybe it was.
Or maybe that's just the most believable version of how journalists who challenge power end up dead.
