I must confess that until recently I had never heard of Phool Dei, a spring festival that was celebrated yesterday in the villages of Uttarakhand.

Children gather fresh flowers from the hills and go from house to house placing them on doorsteps, offering a blessing for the household:

“Phool Dei, Chhamma Dei,
Deni Dwar, Bhar Bhakar…” roughly wishing the home prosperity.

In return they receive sweets.

It reminded me a little of Halloween in the U.S., where children go door to door saying “trick or treat.” But what a lovely contrast. Here the children arrive not threatening a prank, or asking first, but giving first. Flowers.

In an age when we speak so much about environmental consciousness, this graceful celebration of spring and nature deserves to be far more widely known.

Just as Holi travelled across India and the world, perhaps Phool Dei should too.

For me, the children of Uttarakhand are my #MondayMotivation

Long post but I will try to make sure it is worth it for you to read:

Just want to reassure Indians worried about rising crude prices and energy shipment crunch - Do not worry. The issues to India are temporary. India will come out of this very fine by end of this year.

The US is controlling most of world's energy now. Its target is China. Not India, as India is playing this very well with its stance, support, and statements. So don't fall for propaganda and invite issues for India.

Russian oil will soon flow in plenty to India under US blessings. But will find it difficult to flow to China (at least via the western route). https://t.co/rF0V4d0Qgs

Remember, via the western route from Russia (middle east/suez–red sea route) roughly 900,000 barrels per day flow to China (seaborne Urals crude.) People imagine all Russian energy somehow flows to China via east / pipes, so China won't have an issue. This is wrong. But surely China is prepared for a few months.

So, much of this China bound western Russian oil will flow to Europe too via India (refined). Venezuela oil is already flowing to Indian (refineries), which India can utilize too. Once VZ oil started flowing to Indian refineries, only then US made a move on Iran. https://t.co/TaGbACu4NA

Again, remember what I had posted before: Russia is now in bed with the US. It will trade its oil to EU and India in USD too if needed. Because US has already given it such a great deal with respect to Ukraine war. Only after this deal, US went into Venezuela and now Iran. https://t.co/VU6CqLYxJy

US is already world's largest oil producer - for a good reason they ramped up production so much. India is also buying US oil now. The US already is controlling shipping in middle east. It will escort tankers out of Iraq, Saudi, Qatar, Kuwait based on where they are heading.

India, being one of the largest global refineries, will be allowed to get access on priority as Trump would not want oil prices to stay high to cause issues at home or benefit Russia too much. (This is why I'm worried some adversaries may target our refineries using this war as an excuse.)

All the above means, due to short term disruptions and oil price increases, India will definitely have a little fuel and fertilizer crunch. But India can manage that. If the GoI decides, it may even absorb the price shock to keep petrol, LPG, and fertilizer prices stable.

Indians should not worry too much. India is playing this very, very well. By the end of this year, India must have good access to cheap oil and very good influence and access in the middle east. For now just sit tight and ensure anti-India forces do not try to disrupt our peace and stability.

When it comes to foreign policy, we should always support our country's interests. It may or may not be the "right" thing according to personal preferences. The narratives may or may not be true. We may or may not like our government or their politics.

But for geopolitics we must learn to put our country's interests first. Especially during conflicts and war, there's no better duty as a citizen than to support our country, its government, and its armed forces. Politics and personal preferences must be kept away.

Because the adversaries use exactly these two to influence public opinion and interfere in democracies to arm twist the country's policies and actions. They use us and our minds as a malleable tool in controlling the country.

We should not allow that. So in this middle east war, look at your country's long term interests in the region, and if the government's actions align in protecting those interests and you. If so, support your government and take their stance. As simple as that.

On the night of May 20, 2025, a little girl in a faded pink frock fell asleep on her mother’s lap at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Her parents, simple people from Solapur, had come to Mumbai for her father’s treatment. They were exhausted. Just for a moment, the mother closed her eyes.

When she opened them, her daughter was gone.

Six months.
Six months of walking from police station to police station.
Six months of showing the same crumpled photograph to strangers on trains, in slums, in orphanages.
Six months of the father not sleeping, the mother not eating, both of them growing hollow-eyed, whispering the same name into the dark: “Aarohi… Aarohi…”

In Varanasi, a thousand kilometres away, a tiny girl with no memory of her real name was learning to call herself “Kashi.” She had been found crying near the railway tracks in June, barefoot and terrified. The orphanage gave her food, a bed, and a new name. She smiled easily, because children always do, but sometimes at night she clutched the edge of her blanket and asked for “Aai” — Marathi for mother — and no one understood.

Back in Mumbai, the police refused to close the file. They printed posters with Aarohi’s face, stuck them on every platform from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to Bhusawal to Varanasi Cantt. They ran newspaper ads, knocked on doors, begged journalists for help. Six months is a long time for hope to stay alive, but some officers carried her photograph in their shirt pockets like it was their own child.

Then, on November 13, a local reporter in Varanasi saw the poster. Something clicked. He had seen a girl who spoke Marathi words in her sleep. He made a phone call.

The next morning, a Mumbai Police inspector sat in front of a laptop in Varanasi and opened a video call. On the screen appeared a little girl in a pink frock — the same colour she was wearing the day she vanished. The mother, standing behind the officer in Mumbai, saw her daughter and collapsed without a sound. The father just kept repeating, “That’s my Aarohi… that’s my baby…”

They flew her back on Children’s Day — November 14.

When the plane landed, the entire Mumbai Crime Branch was waiting. They had bought her balloons and a new frock, sky blue this time. But the moment the little girl stepped out and saw the sea of khaki uniforms, she did something no one expected.

She ran.

Not away — toward them.

Tiny legs pumping, arms outstretched, she threw herself at the nearest officer and laughed — the purest, clearest laugh that had been missing from the world for half a year. The officer, a tough man who had seen everything, felt his eyes burn. He lifted her high, and she wrapped her arms around his neck like he was family.

Her parents were crying too hard to walk. So the policemen carried their daughter to them.

The mother touched her face again and again, as if checking she was real. The father fell to his knees and pressed his forehead to his child’s tiny feet, sobbing words no one could understand except God.

And the little girl? She just kept smiling, looking from her parents to the officers and back again, completely unaware that she had turned an entire police station into a sobbing, laughing, praying family.

Six months of darkness ended in one hug.

Aarohi is home now.
The kidnapper is still out there, but that is tomorrow’s fight.

Today, a mother is singing lullabies again.
Today, a father is smiling in his sleep.
And somewhere in Mumbai, there are policemen who will never forget the weight of a four-year-old girl in their arms — the weight of an entire life returned.

Sometimes the uniform doesn’t just catch thieves.
Sometimes it carries lost children all the way back to their mothers’ hearts.
