If the vaccination programme that was in place under the Sheikh Hasina government had simply continued, more than a thousand children would not have died from measles.
These children died, and are continuing to die, because Yunus’s illegal government discontinued the programme. Yunus’s government committed this wrongdoing under the pretext of changing the vaccine procurement process. Even after repeated warnings and requests from UNICEF, the Yunus government went ahead and stopped the programme.
As a result, so many children have died. Yet, astonishingly, there is no accountability whatsoever.

The case against Yunus’s Grameen Kalyan involving Tk 666 crore in tax evasion was filed and pursued when Sheikh Hasina was in power.
At the time, Dr. Yunus would appear before the court and then speak to the media in an extremely emotional manner, portraying himself as a victim of political persecution. He repeatedly claimed that Sheikh Hasina and her government were deliberately harassing him out of personal resentment. Even the difficulty he allegedly faced climbing the stairs to the courtroom became a subject of extensive media discussion and television talk shows.
Many people in Bangladesh believed that narrative. Much of the international media also adopted and amplified Yunus’s version of events.
Then came August 5, 2024. Yunus assumed power himself and subsequently became embroiled in numerous instances of apparent conflicts of interest—reportedly in at least 33 cases. One of those involved this very tax case. Apparently, within about a week of taking power, the case was withdrawn.
Now the High Court has ruled that the case itself was valid and has ordered Yunus to pay Tk 666 crore in connection with the tax matter.
This judgment fundamentally undermines the narrative that Sheikh Hasina had pursued the case merely to harass or persecute Yunus. The very case that Yunus had portrayed as political victimisation has now resulted in a judicial finding against him.
The current BNP government may have considerable political and institutional influence from Yunus, but despite that, I welcome the court’s decision to revive the matter and deliver its judgment. The judiciary deserves appreciation for allowing the case to be adjudicated on its merits. Those who once rushed to defend Yunus are now, reportedly, expressing regret.
The significance of this judgment goes far beyond Tk 666 crore.
For years, Yunus presented himself to the world as a victim of Sheikh Hasina’s personal vendetta. Today, the court’s judgment provides a very different picture.
It reinforces what Sheikh Hasina had repeatedly said: that her government’s actions against Yunus were not simply an exercise in personal vengeance, but were connected to serious questions concerning financial, business and institutional conduct.
And as more facts emerge, it is becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss Sheikh Hasina’s longstanding allegations against Yunus as mere political persecution.

Bangladesh’s official non-performing loan (NPL) ratio stood at 9% at the end of 2023. After the Awami League government left office on August 5, 2024, the NPL ratio surged to 20.2% by December 2024, according to data from Bangladesh Bank and the Asian Development Bank. This sharp deterioration shows how quickly the banking sector began to unravel under the Yunus administration.
Two years after the Awami League left office, Bangladesh now has nearly Tk 33 out of every Tk 100 in bank loans classified as non-performing, giving it the world’s highest non-performing loan rate. Bangladesh has now reached the top of the global rankings for non-performing loans, a clear reflection of how badly the banking sector has been mismanaged.
The Yunus administration bears much of the responsibility. During its 18-month tenure, many entrepreneurs who were not loan defaulters as of August 5, 2024, were subsequently arrested and jailed on politically motivated false charges. As a result, many businesses were disrupted or destroyed, forcing previously non-defaulting entrepreneurs into default.
At the same time, political cronies of both the Yunus administration and the current BNP government have exploited the disorder in the banking sector, looting banks with little accountability. The result is the alarming level of non-performing loans we see today.
The Awami League’s Remorse:
Some of the July militants still want to claim that the Awami League has not yet shown remorse.
To them, I say this: If, since August 5, 2024, you had not killed more than a thousand Awami League leaders and activists; if you had not burned and destroyed the homes of thousands of Awami League leaders and activists; if you had not kept Awami League leaders and activists in prison for years without trial; if you had not banned the Awami League, deprived the people of their right to vote, and held a one-sided election; if you had not killed Awami League leaders and activists day after day while they were in police custody; if you had not demolished the house at Dhanmondi 32 under government patronage; if you had not halted children’s vaccinations and caused the deaths of more than a thousand children; if you had not destroyed the educational lives of hundreds of students simply because they were members of Chhatra League; if you had not subjected Awami League leaders and activists to years of persecution and repression; if you had brought to justice those who killed police officers and Awami League leaders and activists during July-August instead of granting them impunity; and if you had not continued a culture of impunity and denial of justice throughout this entire period, then the Awami League might indeed have considered showing remorse.
After everything you have done to the Awami League day after day, how can you expect the Awami League to show remorse? The Awami League is now thinking about restoring democracy to the country and bringing you to justice.
Before asking the Awami League to show remorse, you should first show remorse for the wrongdoing you are committing now.
You chose a path of ugly and brutal revenge against the Awami League and never gave the party an opportunity to show remorse. The Awami League will not show remorse now; it will ensure justice for every single crime that has been committed and will also hold you accountable and bring you to justice.

The unfortunate incident that took place in Italy within the Bangladeshi community—where a group of people apparently threw water and Coke onto an actress from Bangladesh in protest of what they believe makes her one of the people responsible for much of their suffering in the last two years—is not an isolated incident.
Those who consider this an isolated incident are making a mistake. This is not a so-called attack on any specific individual. Rather, it can be said that the "individual" here is not important at all, because no specific person was the target. The individual upon whom "water" and "Coke" were apparently thrown is merely a victim of a situation arising from a larger crisis.
Every action has a reaction—that is science. Is there any scope to deny this? “Exclusion” makes society conflict-prone, and the manifestation of a conflict-ridden society is bound to look like this.
I say again, if society is not inclusive, if one-sided injustice and oppression continue in society, then "differences of opinion" turn into division and become toxic. Especially when revenge takes the place of justice, when mob rule is established instead of the rule of law, and when double standards are applied regarding democracy and human rights, it is only natural for such incidents to occur as an expression of the toxic division created in society.
To solve this problem, one must go to its roots. No solution will come from blaming one another. Unless society and politics become inclusive, and unless the human rights of every citizen are equally upheld, this toxic division will not be eradicated.
The only solution is to make justice, the rule of law, human rights, and political rights universal rather than one-sided, and to make the political and electoral processes inclusive. Everything currently happening in Bangladesh is non-inclusive and one-sided; hence, its reaction is taking place outside the country. These reactions will gradually start happening inside the country as well, which will not be good for this society at all. Even worse times lie ahead, and the Yunus administration alongside the current BNP-Jamaat ruling group will be held responsible for it.
