@GavinGewecke We kept a few Plymouth Barred Rocks a very long time ago but can't recall how they were as layers or regards temperament, sorry. Remember seeing Australorps at the Devon County Show, but have never kept them, so not much help there either.

@GavinGewecke Buff Orpingtons are lovely, peaceful, easy to handle, eggs not so prolific. Light Sussex and Rhode Island Red good too. Wellsummers are beautiful and lay eggs that are chocolate brown.
Avoid Leghorns as are flighty.
The common hybrids are great if you want lots of eggs.
