@DeidreGilley A5: I think it can affect both. I have experience with a family who shared with their child that they should not have a relationship bc of their disability. But, it did not stop him! ๐ #transitiontalk I think it is important to empower individuals to help them feel like they can
@DeidreGilley Agreed! We should not avoid talking about this just because it can cause controversy! It is our duty to educate our students to the best of our ability!
@DeidreGilley A4: I think teaching students about the process and simulating voting through holding practice elections, like voting for your favorite cookie would help!
Are there any practices in place to help someone vote? Are they able to have an aid while voting? #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A3: I think all three of those factors shaped each student and led to their differences. However, I think all three of them had supportive family members who were willing to do everything they could for their child/sibling! #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A2: Using just a number to determine someone's worth is never a good idea. Just as an ACT score often decides if some1 gets into a college, an IQ is just a way to decide if a student does or does not have the label of a disability which affects them 4 life #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A1: I was disturbed that the Eugenics movement was considered a "normal" thing to do. To think that was the norm for those who had a lower IQ is absolutely mind blowing. The saddest part was that those who it happened to were not always able to voice against it. #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A5: Learning to be an advocate! Being comfortable to point out when you see an injustice and seeking out opportunities to share your voice on the topic! #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A4: I would say first and foremost to treat people with disabilities the same as you would others! Be open and honest when communicating with them and don't be afraid to give a little constructive criticism! Treating them as equals is #1! #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A3: I think not being afraid to start the conversation young! Even just talking about their hopes and dreams for when they "grow up"! "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is one of my favorite questions to ask littles! #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A2: I would say the biggest barriers are access to resources to 1. find the job 2. learn to be successful at the job! It is one thing to get the job, and another to keep it! #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A1: I was infuriated with that! It is not fair at all especially for the hard work and love that they put in to their jobs! #TransitionTalk
@DeidreGilley A5: The documentary, specifically the part where the protestors were climbing the steps to Capitol Hill reinforced the resilience and strength the disability community can show. That scene brings tears to my eyes every time! #transtiontalk
