Heading back to America now, but this morning I had the opportunity to congratulate President elect @ABDELAESPRIELLA in person for his epic victory: largest voter turnout in Colombia’s history.

We talked at length about illegal migration and he immediately agreed that ANY Colombian citizen claiming asylum should return to Colombia and that he would ensure their safety and security.

To be clear: America welcomes immigrants who arrive legally, do not file fake asylum claims, are throughly vetted, learn our language, assimilate, and do not undermine our foreign policy.

Coming to America is a privilege, not a right.

I just spoke to @ABDELAESPRIELLA and congratulated him on an historic victory to become the next president of Colombia! The people of Colombia have spoken and the institutions charged with conducting this election did it impeccably and in a world class fashion. In fact, we have a lot to learn on how to have secure elections and, at a later date, will ask Colombian officials to brief the US Congress on their process.

Abelardo is a strong leader, a fighter, and someone who loves his country. I know he will work tirelessly to make Colombia safe, strong, and successful again. He will be the President for all Colombians.

For two centuries the United States and Colombia have had an incredible, unbreakable alliance. Together, we will defeat the cartels, fight transnational crime, stop illegal migration, expand trade, and bring more opportunity and prosperity to both of our nations.

This is a new chapter for Colombia. Now is the time for unity, calm, confidence, and moving the country to a bright future. I look forward to working closely with my friend, president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, to achieve great things together.
