One important factor people keep ignoring about our love for Wizkid and his GOAT status is that we Millennials literally watched him grow, and we grew with him. We grew up with his sound. He won us over with that unique voice and a sound that felt completely different from the likes of P-Square, 2Baba and the other artists we were used to at the time. That connection runs deep. And it isn't just Millennials. Even the older generation isn't left out because they watched him grow from that young kid into one of Africa's greatest and one of the biggest artists in the world. It's the same reason Ronaldo's longevity hits differently. Gen Z didn't necessarily have to grow up with Wizkid to connect with him. They simply resonated with his sound because he was relatable. Young and old could find something in his music. He gave us Fuji, Caribbean, Afrobeats and R&B influences all in one sound and somehow made it feel natural. This is also why I believe a lot of the hate he receives today is rooted in something people don't want to admit: they expected him to fade away. They genuinely didn't think he would last this long. They expected him to become irrelevant as he got older, just like some of the generations before him. Unfortunately for them, Wizkid is simply too talented to be taken out that easily. For instance, look at his son, Boluwatife Balogun, at just 14 years of age. Look at what he's already doing with rap, just like his father Wizkid started out. That is the kind of influence I'm talking about. Wizkid didn't just build a career; he made young people believe they could start early, make it and actually build something that lasts. Almost every new generation of Nigerian artists has, in one way or another, looked up to him. Including your favorites. So seeing Wizkid still making this kind of impact and pulling off these kinds of exploits at 36+ was never part of the plan for a lot of people. No matter how you spin it. No matter what agenda you create online. No matter how hard you try to rewrite history. One thing I'm thankful for is this: every single one of you goes to bed knowing Wizkid is the GOAT, and that man has paid his dues to earn and retain that status.
