Scotland's national flower the Scottish Thistle:

National Symbol: The thistle has been an emblem of Scotland for centuries, appearing on coins, coats of arms, and logos.

The "Guardian" Legend: According to 13th-century legend, the thistle saved Scotland during an invasion. While attempting a stealthy night ambush near Largs, invading Norse warriors removed their footwear. A barefoot soldier stepped on a prickly thistle, and his cry of pain alerted the sleeping Scottish clansmen, saving the army.
