Roehampton University is planning to sack half its workforce and scrap arts and humanities courses. Its workers are fighting not just for their jobs, but against government efforts to make higher education the privilege of an elite few.

Roehampton management are planning to close the classics department & make over 200 staff redundant over arts and humanities this year. This is terrifying for us but also the wider state of access to these subjects for working class students! Please help: https://t.co/RswXwx7hIs

[Classics After the Classroom @ClassicsATC]

In 2018 I undertook a study looking at all the different directions Classics could lead you in life. To close one of the UK’s most inclusive and diverse Classics departments would be hugely damaging.

@UoRClassics has produced transformative research and have been pioneers in progressive #Classics teaching, claiming praise for their work on gender, sexual violence, and disability in particular.

[Rutgers Classics @RUClassics]

Since 2018, @RUClassics has partnered with @UoRClassics, so far hosting 2 of its amazing professors, @KathrynTempest & @MalikShushma, with more exchanges planned for London in spring '23. We sought out @RoehamptonUni as a model of excellence & accessibility. The cuts are shocking

[Chris Kremmydas @ChrisKremmydas]

I just added my name to this petition. When one Classics department is attacked, we all feel the pain and our whole discipline suffers! Please stop this cruel attack on our distinguished Classics colleagues @UoRClassics! https://t.co/woGrPh1bl6
