The ukulele was introduced to Hawaii in the second half of the 19th century by the Portuguese from the island of Madeira under the name machete da braça. The first ukulele store in Hawaii was opened in 1880 by Manuel Nunez (1843-1922). Hawaiians use the ukulele to play sentimental songs in English and “Hawaiian-style” music

The instrument's name (Hawaiian ʻukulele) translates to “galloping flea-what the quick movements of the right hand look like when playing the ukulele. Considering that before coming to Hawaii, the ukulele's cognate small guitar kawakinho was brought by the Portuguese to Africa in the XV century, it is possible that this name is somehow related to the word ukulele from the South African (Kafr) language kosa (uku - infinitive particle, similar to the English to + lele - verb “to sleep”), the meaning of which well conveys the dreamy and pensive mood caused by the sounds of ukulele

The instrument began to gain popularity in the United States after Hawaiian musicians performed at the Panama-Pacific Exposition held in San Francisco in 1915. The peak of its popularity came in the 1930s
