Happy Black Music Month 🎶
For those who don’t already: Take time to listen to music and do nothing else. Don’t scroll your phone, don’t text, don’t flip through a book. Just sit there and listen. Maybe even close your eyes. You might be surprised what a beautiful and therapeutic experience it can be.
The problem for a lot of y’all is that you think colorism is just about people wanting to fuck you. No, like, when you’re darker skinned you get treated LESS HUMAN. People are meaner to you, you get less opportunity, you are afforded less space for mistakes, etc.
I think if we keep chasing nostalgia we'll never find the spark that led to eras/aesthetics like this in the first place. Creatives need to be experimenting again.
This really is my only reaction when listening to D’Angelo after his passing.
He’s really gone but he gave and left us so, so much, and I’m forever grateful.
I don’t stay positive all the time, I stay grounded. I let grief, doubt, regret, & fatigue pass thru me freely without letting them define me, b'cause clarity eventually returns.
I hold onto my purpose, which steadies me when emotions fluctuate.
And, I remember to laugh.
