RIP George 😢

It is with great sadness we learn of the tragic passing of 11 year old George Dennis who played for Ongar Juniors U12s. George was rushed to hospital with serious injuries following a crash on Epping Road on the afternoon of July 10. The 11-year-old sadly later died, with his family continuing to receive support from specialist officers.

A statement from his club is as follows, It is with immense sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that our former and recently returning player, George, tragically lost his life in a road traffic accident.

George was a talented footballer, a natural leader and a much-loved member of the Ongar Juniors family. Known affectionately as “Twinkle Toes”, he will be remembered for his wonderful ability, his huge smile and the joy he brought to his teammates and coaches.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with George’s family, friends and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss.

In 1989, an Englishman proposed something that would transform commerce, communication and culture.

His boss wrote three words on the cover:

“Vague, but exciting...”

Tim Berners-Lee was born in London in 1955. Both his parents were mathematicians who had worked on the Ferranti Mark 1, the first commercially available general-purpose electronic computer.

In March 1989, while working at CERN near Geneva, he devised a system that would allow information to be linked and shared between different computers.

By the end of 1990, he had built the first web server and browser-editor, and created HTML, HTTP and URLs.

In 1991, he opened the system beyond CERN.

Then, on 30 April 1993, CERN placed the underlying software in the public domain.

No patent.
No licence fee.
No royalty every time someone opened a page or followed a link.

Berners-Lee could have tried to turn it into a private toll road.

Instead, he helped keep it open and universal.

He was knighted in 2004 and received the Turing Award in 2016.

Every website.
Every online shop.
Every search engine.
Every social platform used in a browser.

All of them rest on foundations laid by one Englishman working quietly in Geneva.

Born in London.

To honour his legacy, a blue plaque will be installed on the house where he grew up in Scarborough.
