Charlotte Fire Celebrates Black History Month
This Black History Month, Charlotte Fire honors the Black firefighters who have helped shape our department, strengthen our culture, and serve this community with courage and commitment.
From those who broke barriers and opened doors to those leading, mentoring, and inspiring the next generation today, their impact is woven into the history and future of Charlotte Fire. Their service reflects resilience, professionalism, and a deep dedication to protecting the city we all call home.
We are proud to recognize their contributions not just this month, but every day, as we continue working toward a department that reflects the community we serve and values excellence, respect, and opportunity for all.
We are Charlotte Fire.
Charlotte Fire congratulates Rod Wallace on his promotion to Battalion Chief. A West Charlotte High School and North Carolina Central University graduate, he joined Charlotte Fire in 2001 as part of Recruit Class 62, has served at Firehouse 8 for the past 12 years, and coaches the Charlotte Fire basketball team, Blaze. His leadership on the job and on the court continues to make a difference for our department and our community.
FACING THE FIRE WITHIN.
Engineer Brian Rodman’s cancer journey began with a routine Charlotte Fire physical. Within weeks, he was faced with a life-changing diagnosis, and the strength of his family, crew, and department surrounded him.
His story is part of our series “Facing the Fire Within,” shared during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness, encourage screenings, and honor those who fight this battle.

Charlotte Fire Honors the Legacy and Future of Black Firefighters. Long before Charlotte was chartered, Black firefighters were protecting their communities, paving the way for future generations. The historic Neptune Fire Company, founded in the 1800s, stood against the odds, ensuring safety despite limited resources and systemic barriers.
Today, that legacy continues through the @NeptuneFireCLT, where Charlotte Fire’s firefighters are making history of their own. From mentorship to leadership, they are shaping the future of the fire service and inspiring the next generation.
This Black History Month, we honor the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead to the future. Read how Charlotte Fire’s firefighters are carrying the Neptune legacy forward here-> https://t.co/5a5Cz2rUpU

Join Us for the 5th Annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Conference in Charlotte!
We’re thrilled to announce the City of Charlotte's fifth annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Conference, happening from September 29 to October 2.
When you hear "DEI Conference," race and gender often come to mind, but this event is so much more. We're expanding the conversation to include recruitment strategies, legal frameworks, cultural diversity, and human relations. Our workplaces are evolving, and so must we. The theme, “Bridging Perspectives, Empowering Change with Intentional Inclusion,” speaks directly to this need.
Sticking to the familiar can be tempting, but true growth comes when we step outside our comfort zones. Continuing to do things "the way they've always been done" can stifle innovation and progress. We all know that repeating the same actions and expecting different results is the very definition of insanity.
This conference is more than just a dialogue—it’s a catalyst for change. We'll explore how to dismantle organizational and personal barriers, paving the way for true inclusion and sustained success.
Don't miss out on this opportunity to be part of the conversation that will shape the future of our workplaces.

Today, Charlotte Fire honors the tremendous sacrifices, steadfast devotion, and relentless work of dads to build better futures for our families. We honor the fathers and father figures in our lives who give us unconditional love and support. To the hundreds of dads who make up Charlotte Fire and sacrifice themselves to serve our community, we thank you. These amazing men who we call dad, pops, father, papa, daddy and sometimes “old man”, who shape our character, help us reach our full potential, and believe in us so that we can believe in ourselves, thank you. Happy Father’s Day.
After being laid off following a corporate merger, Capt. Mario Arango wanted to do something different. “I remember a (firefighter) telling me, if this gets in your blood it will be all you’ll ever want to do.” He joined Charlotte Fire in 2009 after graduating recruit class 81.
