Introduction — One Prince, A Prince for Each of Us

“I don’t get what’s so great about Prince.”
“I tried listening, but he just doesn’t make sense to me.”

I hear these comments often—short, almost like haiku. And as someone who has loved Prince since 1985, I can’t help but want to answer, to try and put his magic into words.

Consider this: yes, Prince is the rock star whose Purple Rain sold over twenty million copies worldwide. But he was never just a “hitmaker.” For him, a hit wasn’t the goal—it was a passport, the means to create whatever he truly wanted.

Or this: he once received a record-setting five million dollars to headline Coachella. At the same time, he also played impromptu free concerts on the street, handing out CDs or even perfume at his shows.

His world spanned from zero dollars to five million. Or this: he was a one-man orchestra, layering every instrument, every vocal track himself. And yet he also thrived in collaboration—with bands, with orchestras, with entire audiences. He even gave away songs, like “Manic Monday,” which became a hit for The Bangles. That’s Prince.

The moment you try to define him, another Prince appears. The deeper you go, the more you realize how much you still don’t know. He is a prism of countless facets, and any attempt to pin him down leaves you chasing his reflection. Which is why the question, “What’s so good about Prince?” always slips through language.

Still, that doesn’t mean words are useless. I know this because I’ve learned so much about him through the words of others.

“When Doves Cry—his first U.S. number one—was recorded entirely by Prince. Every sound, every voice. Maybe he chose to make it alone because the song’s theme was solitude.”

His art is a kind of engine for positivity, and to listen to Prince is to step into an experience of change.

This book gathers the voices of people around the world who have lived with his music, each answering seven simple questions.

What did it mean for a white teenager from a strict Christian family to fall headlong into Prince?

How did a long, uncommercial intro pierce the heart of a father who disliked him?

How did a woman who lost her unborn twins hear the songs where Prince mourned his own child?

Origins of Purple Rain,

Purple Rain' was originally written as a country song, and was intended to be a collaboration with Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks.

According to Nicks, she received a 10-minute instrumental version of the song from Prince, with a request to write the lyrics, but she felt overwhelmed by the task.

She later said: "I listened to it and I just got scared. I called him back and said, 'I can't do it. I wish I could. It's too much for me.'"

Prince then asked his backing band to try the song: "I want to try something before we go home. It's mellow."

According to Lisa Coleman, Prince changed the song dramatically after Wendy Melvoin started playing the guitar to accompany the song: "He was excited to hear it voiced differently. It took it out of that country feeling.

"Then we all started playing it a bit harder and taking it more seriously. We played it for six hours straight and by the end of that day we had it mostly written and arranged."

Prince's explanation on the meaning of 'Purple Rain':

"When there's blood in the sky – red and blue = purple... purple rain pertains to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith/god guide you through the purple rain."

After recording the song, Prince phoned Journey member Jonathan Cain, to ask him to listen to it.

Prince was concerned that it might be too similar to Journey's 'Faithfully', a song composed by Cain which had recently been in the US charts.

However, Cain reassured Prince by saying that the songs only shared the same four chords.

"I thought it was an amazing tune," Cain said. "I told him, 'Man, I'm just super-flattered that you even called. It shows you're that classy of a guy. Good luck with the song. I know it's gonna be a hit.'"
