There are two way to solve it.
Short.
3( x +9 ) = 42.
Divide both side by 3
3( x +9 )/3 = 42/3
X + 9 = 14
Note:
You take the +9 to the other side it automatically becomes Negative ( -9 ) a change in the sign it carrys .
× = 14 - 9
X = 5
