Many people ask me what it’s like being an independent artist in a monopolized industry. I have been subjected to de-prioritization when competing with major label artists in an ecosystem that is rewarded by payola.
We live in a world of conformity and when somebody like myself goes against the grain to try to do something different, I am met with non-stop gatekeeping.
I once had a song climb in the alternative radio space and it was taken out exclusively because major record labels had bought placement.
A large chunk of contemporary artists today are faking and buying streams to hyper inflate the perception and facade to be accepted by a grander audience. The issue is these artists don’t even know it’s happening, the label just does it.
This is not me complaining. I’m incredibly blessed to be in the position I am in, and thank you to those who enjoy my music.
I know it may be discouraging for independent artists starting off, but please make art because you love the craft. The success will follow and disregard all the bullshit and noise that you may encounter on the way.
Keep your head down, support other artists, build a world and community of people that you believe in and believe in you.
i haven’t spoken about this due to my visa status, but fuck it i don’t stand for this shit, never have and never will. the senseless violence in our current world is sickening. abolish ICE.
