Does greedy Britain have the power to protect themselves from Islamic takeover?
A #Finnish citizen of Nigerian origin appeared in court in Finland last week to appeal a terrorism conviction for his support for a violent uprising against Nigeria by Christians belonging to the Igbo ethnic group.
A Finnish court convicted Biafran independence activist Simon Ekpa on terrorism charges in 2025 and sentenced him to six years in prison. Ekpa describes himself as an advocate for Biafran self-determination against anti-Christian persecution by the Nigerian government and rival Muslim ethnic militias and rejects being called a terrorist.
Ekpa, 41, leads an independence faction known as the Biafran Government in Exile (BRGIE), which refers to him as its prime minister.
His case has drawn support from the International Freedom Coalition (IFC), a U.S.-based group headed by Walid Phares and Charles Jacobs that calls attention to minorities who have been killed and persecuted by jihadis.
The Igbos are predominantly Christian, while the Nigerian government is largely controlled by Muslim elites belonging to the Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups. The Igbos live primarily in southeastern Nigeria and complain of discrimination by these elites, as well as violent jihadist attacks by Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and Fulani herders, who they say are part of a campaign of forced Islamization.
The Nigerian government has denied this.
Ekpa's social media activity was vocally supportive of a low-level violent uprising against government forces, jihadists, and Fulani herders.
"We are absolutely not terrorists. They come to kill us," Ekpa said in court last week. "We are trying to avenge the deaths of our families. We are not terrorists in defending our territory. There were over a million Biafrans killed [in the 1960s by the Nigerian government]."
He said that the Nigerian government and Muslim tribesmen continue to kill his people even today. Igbos have bitter memories of the 1960s, when Muslim elites waged a campaign of organized pogroms that left 50,000 Igbos dead.
That led to the creation of the Republic of Biafra, a partly recognized, Igbo-dominated state that existed from May 30, 1967, to Jan. 15, 1970.
The conflict was, in part, a legacy of British colonial policy. In 1914, the #British amalgamated the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria — home to individualistic Christian and animist peoples — with the Muslim-dominated Protectorate of Northern Nigeria.
They deliberately cultivated a feudal, Muslim-dominated northern elite that proved pliable to colonial demands. The more independent-minded #Igbo and #Yoruba of the south were harder to control; uniting the two regions therefore served as a power move that also allowed the wealthier south to subsidize the administration of the poorer north.
That power structure continued after Nigeria gained independence in 1960, contributing to the massive loss of life that followed. Presidential candidate Richard Nixon expressed support for Biafra in 1968 in a document entitled "Nixon's Call for American Action on Biafra."
It criticized Nigeria's war on Biafra as "the destruction of an entire people" and said, "Let us at least act as the world's conscience in this matter of life and death for millions."
But as president, #Nixon had to deal with the realities of the Vietnam War and was politically unable to help.
The death toll by the end of the war in 1970 was around 1 million, and the conflict continues to color official Nigerian state policy and U.S. policy toward Nigeria, which rejects secessionism of any kind.
Under Nigeria's "No victors. No vanquished" policy, Igbos sought greater representation in Nigeria following the reconquest of Biafra by Nigerian government forces.
Hudson Institute scholar James Barnett noted that these aspirations were never fully realized.
"These aspirations have not been fully realized, and Igbos have espoused widespread grievances against the Nigerian government and nostalgia for the short-lived Republic of Biafra that was defeated in the civil war," Barnett wrote in a July commentary on the Hudson Institute website, saying that Biafran activism has been met with repression at some times and cooptation at others.
A period of relative peace lasted until the election of the late Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as president of Nigeria in 2015. Buhari served in the Nigerian Army during the Biafran War, which has colored how Igbos view him.
The rise of violent activism by Biafrans under the banner of the Indigenous People of Biafra (#IPOB) followed Buhari's crackdown on the group in 2017. Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (#HURIWA) stated in 2024 that Buhari unleashed the full weight of the Nigerian military and state on IPOB in a biased manner.
HURIWA claimed that a similar degree of force was not directed at Fulani herders. This has given rise to accusations of bias by Biafran groups, which accuse the Muslim-dominated government in Abuja of sectarian favoritism because the Fulani are predominantly Muslim.
The group called on Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to disband the Fulani vigilante group. Religious liberty scholar Nina Shea noted in congressional testimony last November that a Catholic bishop "gave a startling, first-hand testimony that described frequent raids on the farmlands of his Makurdi diocese by armed Fulani #Muslim herders, who kill, rape, or kidnap residents, all the while shouting the jihadi battle cry, 'Allahu Akbar.'"
Shea also stated in her testimony that these herders frequently use firearms in their attacks against Christian farmers, including AK-47 assault rifles.
Reports from the Nigerian media indicate that Fulani herders have spread from their strongholds in northern and north-central Nigeria into Igbo-majority states such as Imo, where #Finnish prosecutors castigated Ekpa last week for supporting an armed struggle.
Ekpa defended the violent actions of Biafrans he supports as self-defense against Fulani "jihadists," Boko Haram, and ISWAP.
Numerous Nigerian press reports indicate that Fulani gunmen have been responsible for repeated attacks against locals, including an American of Nigerian origin in Imo in June 2025 who was gruesomely murdered and whose wife was abducted.
"The Imo State governor seemed massively distracted by the politics of opportunism and securing procured endorsements for second term ambition of the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu so much so that the governor really spends little time in Imo state to pay attention to the issues of a lack of effective and efficient government- led response to the heightened state of insecurity in Imo state made problematic by the sudden invasion of several farmlands by armed Fulani terrorists in Imo State," HURIWA said in a press release.
The group noted that police in Imo State gave a tepid response to the crime. Other reports say Fulani herdsmen create roadblocks that allow them to kidnap, rape, and kill with impunity while carrying heavy weapons.
"The systemic bias in the country is evident from the fact that Fulani herdsmen move about with AK-47 rifles without any harassment by the police and the army whereas a Christian farmer in #Nigeria cannot freely move about with a shotgun without being arrested by the security operatives," Imo #Christian community leader Vitalis Diala told https://t.co/5WKZCJ2pDp.
Amnesty International denounced Imo State's Tiger Base police unit in a February report for torturing detainees with knives, batons, and water and resorting to coerced confessions in violation of Nigeria's 2017 Anti-Torture Act. Many have died while detained, and many are arrested and held without due process.
The unit has also engaged in enforced disappearances of the sort that made #Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet notorious, as well as extortion.
"Despite the horrific violations they have suffered, there has been no accountability to date," Isa Sanusi, director of Amnesty International #Nigeria, said in the report. Shea criticized Tinubu in her 2025 testimony, saying he "has not demonstrated the political will to direct the police and military action within his power to stop Fulani militias."
Ekpa's defense rests on the right to self-determination and resistance found in the Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions, to which Finland is a party but the United States is not. His defense will present its case over the coming week.
@rilwan_94965@Ofer_binshtok Who made you sovereign?
Nigeria, the concentration camp that British created and handed over to fulani for Islamic domination?
The fact that these discussions are coming up shows that people are now understanding the dangers of the forced Nigerian union.
@Zimmerfully@Ofer_binshtok How did you come up with these figures? Was there a census conducted recently?
Millions of Igbos identify as Biafra and will choose Biafra over Nigeria any day.
In doubt? Let’s conduct a referendum? To see how much people wants to be called Nigerians ?
@jephandrew1 @Gbemithenerd @Ofer_binshtok Very foolish argument..
The concentration camp called Nigeria must be divided for the purpose of saving lives..
The Nigerian identity only breeds corruption and misery. The union must be discontinued.
@jephandrew1@Ofer_binshtok How many Nigerians do you think wishes to be called Nigeria?
Was there ever a time that the people, tribes in the so called Nigeria came together and decided the will form a country called Nigeria ?
The Nigerian identity is a crime against Biafra
@tinde_254@Ofer_binshtok@netanyahu How did you know what most people in south east wants ?
The Nigerian union is a mistake made by Britain and Britain must acknowledge this and support the peaceful disintegration of Nigeria to save lives.
1 Corinthians 1:10 — Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
@Ogechukwunkere@MikeArnoldTruth@Ogechukwunkere we are praying for you. We hope United States understands the truth. The children of God must be separated from the darkness called Nigeria.
