🧠 POTS: WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is more than just a fast heart rate. It involves problems with how the body regulates blood flow, blood pressure, and heart rate when standing.

Several mechanisms may contribute:

💧 Low blood volume: Less blood returns to the heart, reducing the amount pumped with each beat. The heart compensates by beating faster.

⚡ Increased sympathetic activity: Some patients have an exaggerated "fight-or-flight" response when standing, which can increase heart rate and cause symptoms such as palpitations and tremors.

🧬 Autonomic nerve dysfunction: Damage to small nerve fibers can impair blood vessel constriction, allowing blood to pool in the legs and abdomen.

🩸 Abnormal blood vessel regulation: Changes in how blood vessels constrict and regulate blood flow may contribute to reduced blood return to the heart.

🛡️ Possible autoimmune mechanisms: Some studies have identified antibodies that may affect autonomic receptors, but their exact role in POTS is still being investigated.

🦠 Post-infectious changes: POTS can develop after infections, including COVID-19, although the mechanisms are not yet fully understood.

Importantly, these mechanisms can overlap. Not everyone with POTS has the same underlying problem, and more than one mechanism may be present in the same person.
