How many neurons have to die for you to develop dementia? Many of us working in Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience pursue this question daily. The photo below, from one of our monkeys with Alzheimer's disease, shows neurons transitioning from healthy (🔵NeuN marker) to dying (🟡AT8 marker). These neurons slowly accumulate pathological Tau protein and spread it to each other. This process can take many years, even decades, without the patient showing any signs of cognitive or behavioral impairment. One of the biggest challenges in the field is how can we develop biomarkers that allow us to test early interventions before it is too late.

My student’s paper was just rejected because a reviewer couldn’t understand “why is chronic stress worse for one group (Black women) than other groups? Shouldn’t the magnitude of effect be the same if others experience stress?” 😒I’m tired.
