🚨NEW: A 55-year-old man died after twice calling 999, only to be told by call handlers an ambulance would not be sent for him and was instead told to wait for a callback.

Brian Hurton had an aortic dissection, when a tear opens up in the body's main artery, and told call handlers that he was losing his breath.

An hour and 12 minutes after his first call a clinician called him back, but it was too late.

An ambulance was not dispatched until 3 hours and 30 minutes after his first call to 999.

Tragic case from Nov 2025. Brian Hurton, 55, East Kilbride (registered blind, no other major conditions), died of aortic dissection after two 999 calls ~17:55.

He reported breathing difficulties & feeling he'd collapse. Told "quite busy," clinician would call back instead of ambulance; call again if worse.

Second call ~10 mins later: "losing breath," alone. Same response. Clinician callback ~1h12m later went unanswered. Ambulance dispatched 21:12 (~3h17m later), arrived 21:19. Found dead on bathroom floor, door ajar.

Family (sister Allison) heard harrowing calls—he was terrified, gasping, begging for help. Review found first call should have been higher priority; hospital delays impacted response. Scottish Ambulance Service accepted recommendations & offered condolences.
