On this day in 1941, two Luftwaffe Heinkel IIIs were shot down over the New Forest, both claimed by Beaufighters of 604 Squadron with the loss of 7 German lives.

On this day 30 May 1945, William Eagle DFC crashed east of Brockenhurst in a Hawker Typhoon. The accident was witnessed by his fiancée who was working at a sawmill with the Women's Land Army.

Today is the 88th anniversary of a terrible air accident in the New Forest. On March 26, 1936, DH84 Dragon G-ACAP was being used to provide ground searchlight crews with practice at locating aircraft in the night sky.
It lost control and crashed near Lyndhurst.
The New Forest campsites open again in March, some are sited on what were WW2 airfields. I wonder if some campers realise the history of where they are when they pitch-up?

He failed to return.

These parallel shallow ditches and ridges in the New Forest are evidence from where heathland was turned over for agricultural use during the Second World War. The Women's Land Army would have been growing and tending crops on this patch.

83 years ago today, Polish RAF pilot Jan Falkowski shot down a Heinkel 111 over Portsmouth. Falkowski's Hurricane was damaged by return fire. He baled out and broke his leg landing on Hayling Island. Mistaken for a German, he was guarded in hospital until his identity was proven.
At Deerleap Inclosure today, chatting all things New Forest & promoting the #NewForestCode. Despite Naomi doing a litter pick here not long before Christmas she's come back with loads- including 63 bags of discarded dog poo. All within 400m of the car park - WHICH HAS A BIN 😞
