And the demand for a game like this was proven two decades ago. GTA San Andreas was literally gang territory wars in a fake LA. It sold 27.5 million copies and became one of the best-selling games of all time. Then every major studio spent the next 20 years pretending that never happened.

Rockstar is the only company with the brand armor to touch this material, and their version reportedly costs $2 billion and comes out whenever it comes out.

That's why the small dev is the one with the real moat here. Activision's $700 million comes with a content filter bolted on, and that filter is doing the indie's marketing for free. Every clip spreads because people know the biggest shooter franchise on earth would never make this.
